The idea of Valery Medvedev to create a hotbed of composting will be useful for summer residents and owners of country houses. With this design solve 2 problems. One is growing seedlings, the second is getting compost.
Both are relevant to any gardener. Seedlings needed in the spring for planting in open ground, matured compost it is necessary in the autumn, with its help it restores the fertility of the soil, renews the soil in greenhouses.
Draw a scheme
The easiest way to use the author’s drawing is to take the dimensions of his hotbed-composting base:
- rear wall height - 1 m;
- front wall height - 0.8 m;
- length - 2 m;
- width on the outer edge - 0.84 m, on the inner edge - 0.8 m.
To understand how the garden structure will look like, you can follow the finished sketch. It shows that the upper part of the composting nursery is inclined, thanks to which rainwater will drain from the surface of the cover.
It is good to have a durable, solid construction in the garden, which will last more than one year, so Valery made the frame of a metal profile tube with a cross section of 20 * 20 mm. Its consumption is given in the table.

To fasten the lid, you need 2 loops. To build the frame - screws.
To assemble the framework of the composting nursery, welding is used. Pipe (profile) is first cut grinder in accordance with the size, then welded, oriented to the sketch. Next, proceed to the trim of the frame, use a screwdriver (screwdriver).
The lower part (60 cm) is sewn with a cut board, the upper part and the cover are sewn with polycarbonate sheets. Using a marker, ruler, stationery knife, they are cut out exactly according to the scheme. Cover with hinges attached to the bottom of the breeding ground.
In the front part of the composting nursery, the bottom 3 boards are made removable, they are placed on the bolts, and they are fixed outside with nuts. Before you get ripe compost they are removed.
The structure sheathed with boards and polycarbonate in the spring is filled with plant waste:
- dry grass;
- last year's foliage;
- poorly rotted compost;
A layer of fertile soil 10-15 cm thick is poured over the plant waste, it is watered well, and after a few days they start sowing seedlings. Any vegetable and flower crops are grown in such a hotbed.
Automatic airing and watering
Summer residents are out of town not often, so the automation of irrigation and ventilation facilitates the cultivation of vegetable and flower seedlings. Automatic airing can be implemented using a thermal drive. This device will open the bed of the nursery when the air temperature rises, close it when it is lowered.
It is necessary to fix the roof of the composting unit with strong twine so that it will not be pulled out by a gust of wind. The length of the restrictive rope should be less than the length of the thermal drive during the maximum opening. Restrictive twine in bad weather will protect the thermal actuator from breakage.
Automatic irrigation using drip tape will solve irrigation issues.As a source of water, you can use any large volume container. In order for the water to flow to the compost by gravity, the barrel (canister) must be raised 1.5 meters above the ground level.
At this width of the hotbed (80 cm) will require 4 rows of drip tape. To connect them to the water supply pipe, you will need fittings. At the entrance to the hotbed, you need to install a filter for water purification and a timer valve for its delivery over time.
Water should be served daily at 18 o'clock. Adjust the duration of watering 1 hour. Observe the interval between watering at 24 hours.
In such a hotbed you can grow seedlings of vegetables and flowers in spring, and sow greens in the summer. In the fall, plant residues successfully perepryut. Ready compost can be used when autumn soil preparation in the greenhouse and open ground.
