Potato is one of the most consumed vegetables in our territory. Therefore, every gardener seeks a rich harvest in his area. But throughout the season you will need to work hard to get a good and tasty potato. Already in the fall, you should start thinking about sowing for the next season.
It is worth remembering that potatoes for planting are selected in the fall. It should have the correct shape and uniform color. The root crop should not be more than 90 grams. Smaller fruits will produce the same crop, and larger potatoes will go to the top. You can also buy potatoes for planting in specialized stores.
Phased preparation of potatoes for planting
First step
First you need to prepare a special place in the cellar for storing tubers. Such a place must be dry, dark, cool. The place itself should help the potatoes to sprout, which will greatly facilitate the planting and climbing of sprouts.
Second phase
These works are carried out before landing in about 40 or 50 days. Potatoes are picked, tubers unsuitable for planting (without sprouts) are selected. Sprouts on other potatoes are also inspected. They should be without black color at the edges. It is better not to choose potatoes that do not look very good and have a threadlike structure.
The most suitable is a potato, which has pronounced eyes, which does not have rotting ends. All processes must be viable and strong. This approach will allow you to get a decent harvest. In addition, you can immediately determine how much the chosen place is suitable for storing potatoes.
Third stage
It is carried out about 15 days before landing. Potatoes are brought into the house, and then into the room, where the temperature is not more than 8 degrees. This approach allows potatoes in a warm room to receive diffused light, which will lead to greening. This helps to reduce the number of bacteria in the tubers and the death of pathogenic fungi.
You can also sprout tubers to a state where full sprouts are formed. Potatoes must be taken to a bright room, where the temperature rises to about 13 degrees, and at night does not drop below 6. This procedure can be carried out for a month. Alternation can be done at weekly intervals. The shoots on the tubers grow quickly in the heat, and harden in the cold.
During the shelf life, the potatoes can be slightly moistened so that it does not dry out.
It can be germinated in a wet way. Potatoes are placed in peat or sawdust. The tubers are placed in a box in which there is moist soil laid out in a thin layer. The temperature in the room, recommended by experts, is not lower than 16 degrees, and humidity is at the level of 80%. This method allows you to get potatoes with sprouts and small roots.
2 or 3 days before planting, tubers are thermally heated. Potatoes are brought for 8 hours into a room where the temperature is about 35 degrees, and after it is ventilated so that the tubers are not steamed.
In order to prevent diseases, potato tubers are very often treated with copper sulfate.
