When to plant?
The lunar calendar shows the most suitable months for planting a vegetable: April, May, June.
Potato is not a capricious plant, but it does not tolerate cold. Therefore, it is better for summer residents to wait until the earth warms up. Normal seedlings are obtained when the tubers are placed in the soil, where the temperature has been maintained for a month already. Topsoil should be heated to +8. The best option is wet spring soil.
It is necessary to pay attention to the phase of the moon. If you engage in planting at an unfavorable time, there may not be a result: the plant does not adapt well, will not develop, will begin to wilt. You can’t get the crop at all.
Work is best done with the waning moon. At this time, the vegetable will actively grow and develop. But during the full moon and new moon in the garden, it is advisable not to do anything.
So what does the lunar calendar say about planting potatoes in 2018?
- April 12 and 13. These dates fall on the prolific Pisces sign. Garden works on these days help to harvest a plentiful crop, which, however, is poorly stored. Such potatoes cannot be used as planting material. But the bushes themselves will be juicy and give tasty root crops. Planting potatoes in early April is not worth it, because the average daily temperature at this time is still very low. Solanaceae may freeze.
- May 1 - The moon is waning in Scorpio. This is the second most productive sign. The culture quickly grows and develops, is resistant to weather conditions and diseases. Summer residents should consider that potatoes can become infected through open damage. Harvested after such a planting, has excellent taste and good keeping quality.
- May 4-6 - The moon is waning in Capricorn, the middle sign in fertility. Plants will give a lot of tasty medium-sized root crops, which will be preserved for a long time. Shoots will form slowly, as the energy is spent on the formation of powerful roots and stems. The vegetable is not afraid of diseases and temperature fluctuations.
- May 9-10 - The moon is waning in Pisces. These days are energetically charged, since they fall on the awakening of the forces of nature. All garden procedures will lead to success.
- June 1 and 2 - The moon is waning in Capricorn. The 17th day of the moon is ideal for work in the garden. The satellite begins to decrease on the 1st day, when the gravitational force of gravity of the Earth increases. The underground parts of crops will actively develop, receive vital energy and juices.
- June 6 and 7 - The moon is waning in Pisces. This is the “landing time", marked by the greatest charge of energy.
Forecasts of the lunar calendar, as a rule, come true, but you do not need to rely on it only during landing operations. For example, if on some day of the above listed snow still lies on the ground or frost is planned, gardening is better to postpone.
What determines the landing time
The date of placement of potato tubers in the soil should be chosen, taking into account not only the ambient temperature, but also other factors:
- variety of culture - early, late or winter;
- the area where the vegetable is grown;
- planting option - under a shovel, straw, into furrows, seedlings;
- time of year - summer, autumn, spring
Let us consider in more detail each circumstance.
Potato planting time of different varieties
Early varieties are planted from mid-April to May 1-5, in more or less warm soil, when the air temperature is 12-15 degrees Celsius. Root crops are harvested after 2 months.
The ripening period of medium varieties is 3 months, medium-late - 3.5 months. Such potatoes are the most common. It is planted from the second half of May until the end of the month.
Late potatoes are usually planted on the eve of winter, and used as animal feed. It matures in about 4 months. So that tubers can be eaten by humans, the planting of late varieties is carried out in late spring - early summer.
How the terrain affects the time of planting potatoes
Later varieties are not suitable for cultivation in the northern and southern regions of Russia. In cold areas, root crops simply do not have time to ripen, and in too warm they turn out to be very small.
In the middle lane and the Leningrad region, it is better to plant potatoes around May 10, but you can do this closer to the end of the month. In the suburbs, landing begins in late April and ends around May 15. The exact date depends on weather conditions.
The optimal period for planting potatoes in the Urals is the end of May. Usually the land is warming well there by June, so this month is preferable.
Several crops are harvested in the Crimea and the Kuban during the season, so potatoes are planted in late May - early June. In Krasnodar, they look more at the variety and the rate of tuber ripening.
In countries of the former USSR with a temperate climate (Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan), soil temperature becomes acceptable by the end of April. In the northern parts of these states, time moves to the beginning of May, and in a number of regions of Kazakhstan, landing is carried out at the end of the month.
How does the timing of planting depend on its method?
In open ground, seedlings of 3 months of age can be placed. Therefore, sowing is carried out in early March in order to make a transplant by June.
Potatoes are planted in the greenhouse, focusing on the timing of the harvest. In the south, the procedure begins in late February, and ends in May, especially if it is grown for sale.
Landing under straw is recommended when setting the air temperature above +8 degrees. This method contributes to the conservation of heat, so this indicator is enough.
On the beds under a walk-behind tractor or a shovel, potatoes are planted directly in the ground.
You can use another 1 month: the prepared planting material is placed in plastic bags, and in April-May they are planted on beds under the film. Then in June, fresh potatoes will be on the table.
What do gardeners think?
Many summer residents plant potatoes, taking into account the signs. They look at other cultures that are always in sight, unlike the moon.
Early varieties are planted as soon as the first leaves appear on the birch, that is, on the 20th of April, and the middle and late ones - in early May, when the bird cherry blossoms.
There are people who consider it necessary to plant a vegetable in July and August. Such root vegetables taste good, they become an excellent planting material.
