A summer cottage is not always an easy place to work. But then, how much positive we get when we harvest our crops! It is influenced by many factors, including the timely planting of certain vegetables and fruits.
A popular Russian culture has long been considered onions. Today, there are dozens of its varieties, some of which are common in our country. Let’s try to figure out how to properly plant onions to receive seedlings and in the ground, identify the agricultural machinery base, and most importantly, how the lunar calendar works in terms of successful harvest during planting.

How is the gardener's lunar calendar applied
The calendar, which is associated with the moon during landing, has been known since antiquity, although not everyone uses it. Meanwhile, this is a huge help to gardeners. Those who are seriously engaged in work in the plots understand well that the results of the harvest are directly related to the quality characteristics of the seeds, proper care, climate conditions in the growing region, and the energy of the sun. When planting, you should be aware of the lunar position, which affects the planting work and the direct development of the growth of fruits and vegetables.
The lunar phases cannot be ignored. So, the first and second quarter are associated with the growing moon from the new moon to the full moon, and the third and fourth quarter are the waning moon, from the full moon to the new moon.
When the moon grows, plant juices are sent up. This is a sign that all crops with an underground fruitful system are undergoing beneficial transformation. But the celestial luminary in the waning phase protects the cultures that give above-ground fruits. In terms of working with onions, you must choose the second option.
In general, there are not so many unfavorable days for the garden. For the month when the new and full was shining, the result is about a dozen days. In great detail - the day of the new moon and three days in the area of the new moon. The same rule with the full moon. So, rest from work on the site is supposed to be 6 days, when, according to astrologers, the development processes are actively changing to the opposite. Nature takes a “time out” and the work will not bring any benefit.
There are, of course, exceptions - the prevention of crop diseases and pest control, soil weeding, fertilizing. With regards to the latter: the growing moon involves the use of mineral complexes, and the waning - organic.
We plan onion planting in different regions
As a rule, this crop is planted in the spring. True, there are varieties that allow you to plant crops under the winter. Therefore, it is recommended to take into account favorable numbers for organizing planting events and the further work plan. The lunar calendar will tell you when to plant onions in 2018 so that the crop is at its best.
The southern latitudes of the country suggest landing on open ground on April 18, 21 and 22, and in greenhouse conditions on March 25 and 26. These dates are associated with the growing moon and its passage in the signs of Cancer and Taurus, which according to the calendar guarantees rich productivity. It is believed that, based on these data, any variety of onion grows successfully.
As for the Moscow region and central Russia as a whole, it is advised to plant the described crop in the open ground on April 29, and in the greenhouse construction on April 18, 21 and 22. Again, the Moon these days favors onion cultivation.
The Siberian and Ural regions are associated with the same calendar numbers as the Moscow Region. Without a landmark for the heavenly luminary, the landing of culture can be carried out in the first half of May. The last period of time is favorable for planting onions in Altai. In any case, be sure to make sure that the soil warms up to +12 degrees.
2018: optimal dates for onion planting
The best planting time for the described crop is related to the direct variety and objectives of the onion itself. Sowing activity is organized in different periods. To plant modern onions is not forbidden in the winter, in order to get proper seedlings.
Landmarks of the lunar calendar go for the whole year, where it is recommended to pay attention to specific dates:
- in the first month of spring - 17, 26 and 31;
- in the second spring month - on the 22nd and 28th;
- in the third spring month, 8–9, 20, and 24;
- as for the summer, it is July 5 and 19 and August 10-11 and 20;
- in the autumn, we will remember the favorable days of September - 9, 13 and 19. October promises good luck on the 6th and 7th and the 16th, and November - 7th, 12th, 14. And in the winter, these dates are on the 6th and 17th of December. Such numbers are of a general plan, which can be oriented to any gardener. The main thing is to take into account the onion varieties and be sure that the planting events logically correspond with the tips for growing and caring for onions for the future harvest.
Leek - combine landing and its goals!
When cultivating onion crops, the main disadvantage is the wrong time for sowing seeds. For the cultivation of any plant, the timing plays the leading role. From antiquity, it became clear that the landing cycle is significantly affected by the moon cycle, which affects the vegetation of most plants.
Believing the lunar luminary is everyone's business, but one cannot dispute the fact that, thanks to numerous trial and error, gardeners made conclusions on the successful following of the lunar calendar for an optimal harvest.
This year promises generosity and fertility when following the lunar cycles. Depending on the desired result, sowing on the pen and on the turnip require a different time period. This is due to the position of the zodiac constellations and the lunar influence on the growth processes on the soil surface and underground. So, nutritious greens will turn out when the night body is under the influence of the water element. But the seed on the turnip is recommended to be planted when terrestrial signs actively influence the moon.
Leek is best planted on seedlings in the following dates of 2018:
- the second month of the year is 7-10, 14, 23-24;
- in March - 2-3.7 and 9.
- the second spring month is on the 18th, 20th, 23rd and 28th.
- in May it is 3, 5, 15 and 20.
If you plant a plant on a favorable day for this, then the growth of the culture will be more active. The moon will affect the landing events and the harvest itself.
It happens that it is impossible to carry out the planned sowing on these dates. Then we use days that are suitable for the weather, but taking into account the phases of the growing and waning moon.
How to plant onions successfully
In addition to using the planting calendar, for successful seed germination certain steps must be followed:
- Seeds for half an hour are recommended to be placed in a pink solution of potassium permanganate. For beneficial effects on the seeds, it is important to set the heat.
- Up to 30 minutes, the seed is quenched in cool water to develop resistance to lower temperatures.
- A good help is wet rags for a period of about a week.
- When the seeds have already sprouted, they are transferred to fertilized soil using humus or peat. Their optimal landing is 10 millimeters in depth, sprout - down.
- Regularly water the soil in a moderate manner.
- With proper implementation of the necessary recommendations, the first seedlings are expected after 10 days. Boxes with onion seedlings are placed on window sills to avoid a lack of light and heat.
Onion crop in terms of agricultural technology
Onion is considered a fairly unpretentious crop for growing conditions. The vegetable is resistant to cold, and the seeds are able to germinate at a temperature just above zero. At the same time, onion shoots can tolerate frosts for a short period up to -5С. Hence, several options for growing them:
- Seeds, if work is carried out in the southern regions, are sown directly into the ground for one year, and full-fledged bulbs appear by the fall season.
- If the culture is two-year-old, then the first year the seeds go to sowing, and the end of summer is marked by the cultivation of onions, called onion sets. It needs to be collected, and already in the second year in the spring period again planted in the ground. And in the second fall we are already getting onions of proper quality.
- To accelerate the development of culture, it is possible to arrange the sowing of seeds in the ground at the end of winter or the beginning of spring in the room. Shoots appear a little, and then they are placed in open ground at the end of spring. Often, onion material, especially small ones, is planted in the fall during the winter, so that the new year is marked by the appearance of early harvest.
- Perennial onions are sown, as a rule, on prepared soil in the spring during the appropriate heating of the earth. Its main advantage is growth without the need for transplantation for five years in one place and the appearance of one of the first in early spring, in the absence of other seedlings.
It turns out that combining the rules for sowing and caring for onions, their goals and the data of the lunar calendar, optimally planned events of sowing properties and obtaining the desired crop.
