Potato variety Rodrigo has many positive reviews with photos, thanks to which you can verify the wide distribution of vegetables in Russia. This variety is grown in the fields and in private lands. The plant is not whimsical at all and ripens in a short period of time.

According to the description, the potato variety Rodrigo is foreign; it was brought to Russia from Germany. Such a vegetable was widely popular because the plant is considered high-yielding, tubers are well stored and mature in 80 days. Therefore, in the warmer regions of the country, the cultivation of Rodrigo potatoes can be done twice a year.

Despite this length of vegetation, it is allowed to start eating vegetables a little earlier. Then the tubers will be fully formed, but the peel will be thin, so potato cooking will be somewhat faster.

In terms of characterization, Rodrigo potatoes are as follows:

  1. The bush is large with a long stem, due to which it is possible to avoid excessive accumulation of moisture or, on the contrary, drying out of the soil with independent watering.
  2. Leaves are small with rich green.
  3. During flowering, large, beautiful red-violet flowers form on the bushes.
  4. Rodrigo potato tubers have a round or oval shape, the peel is of medium thickness, dense, pink in color with a small scattering of eyes that are easy to clean. The pulp of the yellow potato contains a sufficient amount of starch, which makes it possible to produce potato starch and not turn the vegetable into porridge during cooking.

The mass of tubers is quite large, an average of 2000-300 g, but can reach 500-800 gr. Therefore, the yield is very high, and while providing the plant with proper care and proper cultivation, up to 5 kg of potatoes can be obtained from one bush.

The vegetable is well stored, the number of spoiled tubers from the entire crop can reach 5%, is suitable for turnover, since it retains excellent keeping quality and is characterized by excellent taste. To some forms of diseases and pests, the plant is resistant and does not need particularly careful care when growing. Therefore, this variety has gained high popularity and grows widely in our country.

Interesting! In one potato tuber, Rodrigo can be 12-15% starch.

  7. High level of marketability.
  8. It is well stored and almost does not deteriorate.
  9. The tubers reach large size and mass, so there is a high yield, which is almost independent of weather conditions.

Growing rules

Despite the fact that the Rodrigo variety is not whimsical, it is nevertheless necessary to observe some rules of cultivation and care in order to achieve a rich harvest in the summer and prepare enough vegetables for the winter.

To do this, you must adhere to the basic principles of planting potatoes:

  1. The preparation of tubers is an important stage in the cultivation of vegetables, as it allows you to speed up the process of ripening potatoes and harvest in July summer. To do this, it is necessary to spread the pre-selected seed material on the ground so that sunlight can fall on it, for germinating the sprouts. Avoiding wrinkling of tubers will help spraying them with water once a week. When planting large tubers, they can be cut in half. At the same time, after each potato, the knife is treated with alcohol and a slice of the vegetable is sprinkled with wood ash to prevent the development of diseases, especially decay.
  2. Soil selection - in spite of the fact that the Rodrigo variety is not at all whimsical to the soil, it is still advisable to plant potatoes on sandy and loamy soils. The acidity should not exceed 7. The area designated for cultivation should be well lit. In the spring it is recommended to apply fertilizers in the form of ash, superphosphate, ammonium nitrate or potassium chloride. Top dressing is distributed around the entire perimeter of the soil and after it is carefully dug up.
  3. Growing technology - it is customary to plant potatoes in rows, digging small holes about 20 cm deep. Bushes need to be planted at a distance of 30 cm from each other, and an interval of 70 cm should be observed between the rows, because the potatoes are well-bushy and require sufficient space for normal growth and development.

The holes are buried with soil at 5-8 cm. When the tubers are distributed, they should be put up with sprouts, so the bush will develop faster and seedlings will appear together.

Care Rules

An equally important aspect in the cultivation of Rodrigo potatoes is proper care. It consists in timely watering, loosening the earth, weeding, hilling bushes, as well as combating pests and their diseases.

Hilling of potatoes is carried out for the first time not earlier than their height reaches 20 cm. Thanks to this method, it is possible to enrich the earth with oxygen, eliminate stagnation of moisture and remove weeds. Basically, Rodrigo is spurred 1 time, but if necessary, especially as a result of heavy rains, such a procedure should be carried out more often.

Watering for potatoes is also important, especially during the growing season. In an arid climate, watering is carried out independently once a week. In case of heavy and heavy rains, it is necessary to loosen the soil more often and fight weeds. It is advisable to water the plants early in the morning.

To exclude diseases, you should start eliminating them in time. When pests settle on the bushes, resort to the use of chemicals, you can manually collect insects, for example: the Colorado potato beetle or use other methods of control.

Diseases and Pests

It is believed that Rodrigo potato is highly resistant to many diseases, however, it can often undergo late blight in violation of the cultivation technique and subsequent care. Such a disease is determined by the development of dark spots on the leaves and tubers. They can penetrate deep into the potato and it becomes unusable.

Among the common pests of a vegetable, there are Colorado potato beetle, bear, aphid and wireworm. Such insects cause significant damage to the land, disrupting the growth and development of bushes. Since pests live both in the ground and on the surface, not only the leaves and tops, but also the tubers themselves suffer from them.

Note! To protect the crop from diseases and pests will help timely prevention with feed, preliminary preparation of seed material and proper care.

Harvesting and storage of crops

It is undesirable to overexert Rodrigo potatoes in the garden, it is better to harvest the crop on time.Vegetable harvesting begins, usually after 2 months from the moment of planting, or after drying and yellowing of the leaves and tops of the plant.

At first, dug tubers should be laid out on the floor in a room where there is good ventilation, but there is no direct sunlight to dry them.

Storage of vegetables is carried out in a cellar or other room where you can maintain a constant air temperature of at least 3 ° C. Previously, the storage place needs to be ventilated and checked for rodents and other pests. If the latter are present, poison is poured into the corners or other methods of control are used.
