When and how to plant gladioli in spring in open ground

2.05.2018 Gladiolus

Gladioli are beautiful perennials that are grown as annual plants, digging bulbs annually. Proper planting of flowers affects seedlings, growth and flowering.

Preparing daylilies for spring planting

Gladioli are unpretentious, but they can be placed in the soil only according to certain rules, otherwise the efforts will be in vain.

The preparatory phase begins with the wintering of tubers. They are cleaned from the ground and completely cut off the stems. Then the bulbs are washed well and dipped in a solution of potassium permanganate. Next, planting material is placed in cardboard boxes and stored in a cool, dry place. As soon as spring comes, a container with tubers is taken out.

Preparing for landing should begin in mid-April. At first they look for rot on the bulbs. If it occupies most of the tuber, they are disposed of. In the case of a slightly rotten bulb, the affected area is carefully cut and treated with charcoal.

Daylilies are cleaned for germination immediately after wintering. The complete removal of the husk helps determine if there are any spoiled places.

Cleaning also protects planting material from bacteria and fungi. After it, the bulbs are washed and soaked in weakly concentrated potassium permanganate.

How are tubers treated before germination?

Gladioli need rhizome treatment that stimulates plant nutrition. Thanks to her, flowering begins 12-14 days earlier. Here is the recipe for this procedure:

  • 3 g of boric acid;
  • 3 g. Copper sulfate;
  • 2 g potassium permanganate;
  • 2, 5 g. Magnesium sulfate;
  • 1 g cobalt nitrate;
  • 1-1.5 g. Aluminum molybdenum;
  • 0.5-0.7 g of zinc sulfate

Do not overdose components. It can weaken and inhibit flowers that will die over time. Tubers are lowered into the resulting room temperature solution for 12-14 hours, after which they are dried qualitatively and transferred to the next stage.

Germination

This is not a mandatory procedure, but it provides flowers with fast growth and timely flowering. Conducting it is not difficult.

In warm areas daylilies germinate from mid-March. Bulbs are placed on a pallet in a dark place, as excess light can interfere with the process. The tubers soon sprout. 2-3 days before planting, they are placed on a damp napkin, as a result of which small roots form, which help gladioli to root better in the open ground.

Sawdust sprouting

Bulbs are placed in sawdust moistened with water, placed in an unlit warm place. With this method, the fluid is well retained, so the tuber can not only sprout, but also grow roots. Sawdust should be slightly moist, but not wet, otherwise decay will occur.

In peat pots

The advantage of this method is that the planting material is fed with useful substances. To do this, each tuber is placed in a pot, and then on a loggia or window sill.

The plant with this method receives sunlight in full. After 2 weeks, daylilies can be planted on beds.

Time and process of planting gladioli in the open ground

Flowers that have been successfully prepared for planting in the spring are ready for placement on the beds. In warm areas it is better to do this in late April, in cold - in early May. The soil must warm up to at least 10 degrees at a depth of 10 cm, otherwise the tubers will freeze. First, choose the territory for planting, it should be lit. Then do the following:

  1. Measure the depth of the hole. Its diameter should be three times that of a gladiolus bulb. Only in this case the plant will be able to develop normally and go to growth.
  2. Dig holes and pour a handful of fine sand into it.
  3. A tuber is placed on top.
  4. Planting material is instilled into the soil and irrigated with water at room temperature.

How to mulch and water daylilies

The first part of the roots of the plant penetrates the ground at 40-45 cm, supplying the shoot with food and water. As soon as roots are formed in the young bulb, the upper soil layer must be kept moist.

In June, sprouts are watered once a week with the expectation of 2 buckets per 1 square. When buds and flowers are formed during the hot season, gladioli need more moisture, so they begin to be provided with water 2-3 times a week.

Plants are watered under the root so that water does not fall on the leaves. During the day, it should warm up from the sun. When the top layer dries, the soil is loosened.

Moisture and soil structure is maintained through mulching. What is this procedure? The basal area is covered with peat, compost, grass. The layer thickness should be at least 5 cm. Mulch not only retains the liquid, but also nourishes daylily useful compounds that are released after the decomposition of organic components.

Storage of gladioli

The best option for wintering bulbs is the lower shelf of the refrigerator. There they are placed in a bag. It is necessary to control the temperature. If it drops below zero, the tubers will die. Some flower lovers have a special cabinet for gladioli attached to the outer wall of the apartment.

In winter, planting material must be well monitored. In order to avoid thrips, garlic is placed between the bulbs, and sometimes they are treated with mothballs.

In the natural rest of the tubers are 40 days. At this time, they do not germinate, even under suitable conditions. At the end of the period, sprouts can form under favorable humidity and temperature. Bulbs are laid out around the room for a week to dry out, after which they are placed in a cooler place.

After 20 days of storage in the room, the temperature is raised to 12-15 degrees, for the germination of the ground parts of the plant.

Ill tubers must be removed in a timely manner from the total amount of planting material. For its successful storage, you can use waxing. The tubers are thoroughly dried and peeled, and then placed in molten paraffin, the temperature of which should not exceed 35 degrees.

A container with paraffin is placed in hot water so that it does not cool. The tubers are picked up in turn with tweezers and lowered into the composition for 2 seconds, after which they are cooled with water.

Even a beginner grower can cope with the planting of gladioli and caring for them. The main thing is to know how to choose a site and soil for planting, reject unsuitable material and plant flowers in open ground in spring. Then they will decorate the summer cottage for a long time.

    I dry the bulbs of gladioli in the fall for 3 weeks, dig them out before freezing, put them in a cardboard box and keep them in the refrigerator until April.
