Characteristics and description of the variety: tomato "Hedgehog"

7.04.2018 Tomatoes

Tomato "Hedgehog" refers to such varieties of tomatoes that bear fruit equally well in the usual conditions of garden beds, in greenhouses and in tubs or pots on balconies. The choice of a place of cultivation depends on the climatic conditions of the area and the capabilities of the land.

Tomatoes of the "Hedgehog" variety are medium-sized, with fruits in the form of cream, undemanding to care. The new development of Russian breeders allowed us to create a culture that is resistant to adverse weather conditions and diseases that affect the nightshade family.

Bush description

Very compact determinant bush. The height depends on the growing conditions, and in some cases becomes from 50 cm to 1 meter.

Attention! Determinant tomato varieties are varieties that do not grow constantly throughout the growing season. Caring for them is simplified by the absence of the need for constant pinching and stalk formation.

Fruit characterization

The fruits of the Hedgehog Tomatoes are oblong with a pointed cream tip. The surface of the fetus is smooth, without ribs. The pulp is juicy. The color at the stage of complete biological maturity is bright red.

By maturity, the variety can be attributed to mid-season. From the time of planting seedlings to the harvesting period, it usually takes 110–115 days. These dates may be somewhat biased depending on weather, climate and growing conditions. Tomatoes planted in greenhouses usually ripen somewhat faster.

Productivity, subject to all agrotechnical standards, reaches 15 kg per square meter.

Consumer appointment

This variety is distinguished by excellent taste. Sweet, with pronounced sourness and juicy pulp, tomato allows you to use it universally. Hedgehog tomatoes are equally well used fresh, in cooking, for sauces and tomato juice. Small size, moderately dense skin, convenient shape makes the variety especially suitable for home canning for pickling and salting in general.

Tomatoes are well tolerated transportation. Collected at the stage of technical maturity, they withstand storage for up to one and a half months.

Care Features

Seedlings

For growing tomatoes "Hedgehog" seedling method is recommended. Seeds are sown in separate containers with soil in the spring, in such a way that 55-65 days remain before the estimated period of planting in open ground. Seeds should first be soaked for a day in a weak solution of manganese. This procedure is not necessary, but in this way you can prevent the development of infectious diseases. During growth, seedlings should be watered carefully, avoiding stagnation of water. It is even better to spray with a spray gun.

After the appearance of three strong sheets, the messengers dive, that is, transplanted into a looser container or separate small cups. Sv 10-14 days before transplanting, seedlings are periodically taken out to air for hardening.

Soil preparation and planting

Tomatoes love light, drained and well-fertilized soils. A place for a tomato bed should be chosen in a sunny area, protected from the winds. For planting seedlings, pits are made at a distance of at least 40 cm between them and 50 cm between rows.If the soil is thoroughly fertilized, additional fertilizers do not need to be applied, otherwise, a mixture of organic and phosphate fertilizers is applied under the root of the seedling. Seedlings are placed in a hole filled with fertilizers and water, sprinkled with earth and watered a second time.

Attention! Try to avoid over-saturation of the soil with nitrogen, from which the tomatoes form a thick lush crown, to the detriment of the ovary.

Watering

The first days of seedlings are added daily until engraftment in a new place. Subsequent watering is carried out as necessary, preventing the soil from drying out, but at the same time not filling the roots. Loosening the soil around the bushes will help to prevent stagnation of water.

A good way to retain moisture and prevent crusting on the surface of the soil is to mulch. As a mulch I use dry grass after mowing, straw, dried weeds, sawdust.

It is fit for excessively heavy rainfall, low bushes allow you to stretch a film coating over the garden.

Bush formation

Unlike tall, the determinant varieties of tomatoes, which include the "Hedgehog" variety, do not require constant pinching and strengthening the stems throughout the entire growth period. Nevertheless, once at the beginning of flowering, it is still recommended to remove the lower leaves before the first branching. The same thing with binding - an abundant ovary can break stems that are fragile in structure, so for a bush above 50 cm, tying to a low peg is necessary. This procedure will also help prevent decay of fruits lying on the ground.

Top dressing

Getting a high crop of tomatoes is impossible without top dressing. For this purpose, phosphate fertilizers, a solution of mullein or chicken droppings, a mixture of organics and phosphates are used. Feeding is carried out 2-3 times, with a frequency of two weeks.

Tomatoes "Hedgehog", like all new varieties, are distinguished by late blight resistance. For the destruction of harmful insects, it is possible to process through spraying with special preparations that contain growth stimulants, fertilizers and pesticides.

Attention! The abundance of moisture at the roots can contribute to the development of fungal diseases such as the black leg.
