The variety was bred in the USA in 1924 by Peter Henderson. Already in 1926, the novelty was approved by more than 40 thousand people for its solid size, sweet taste and extremely small number of seeds in the fruits.
The variety was created in order to improve the characteristics of Panderosa tomatoes. The original name of the variety is Winsall, in Russian transliteration the name sounds like “Winsell”, less often “Vinsal”, “Vinsol”.
Variety "Winsell" is considered an excellent choice for growing in your own suburban area.

- Leaves of the correct form.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
The main advantages of these tomatoes are good taste, excellent presentation.
The need to order expensive seeds from the United States can become a stumbling block in the cultivation of this variety. This variety is not very common in Russia, if you try to find seeds on the market or from uncertified sellers, it is very likely that a fake will be acquired.
The variety requires constant care, which includes:
- growing seedlings;
- dive;
- pinching and stalk formation;
- garter stems to supports;
- Frequent watering so that the soil does not dry out (but also is not swampy);
- Fertilizing plants with the types of preparations recommended by the manufacturer (can be found in large online stores, order delivery by mail or courier).
Productivity
The variety is considered high yielding. But in order to collect a large number of fruits from the beds, it is important to observe agricultural technology and maintain optimal conditions for plants. In the southern regions, Winsall tomatoes can be grown in open ground, but it is recommended that they be grown in greenhouses located in sunny areas.
Seed germination of 85%.
Application of Winsall Tomatoes
American tomatoes have a very pleasant delicate taste with a slight sourness. The skin of tomatoes is a little thick. The pulp is juicy, dense. Large tomatoes have a salad purpose, but are also suitable for making sauces, juice, first and second courses, sandwiches.
How to Grow Winsell Tomatoes
Like any other variety, these tomatoes have their own specifics of growing.
Growing seedlings
Table 1. Features of sowing seeds and growing seedlings.
Condition | Indicators Description |
Seeding Depth | ¼ to ½ inch or 0.6 to 1.2 cm. |
Seed germination temperature | + 80 ... + 85 ° F or + 26.6 ... 29.4 ° C. |
The distance between the seeds when sowing | 1 inch or 2.5-3 cm. |
Seed germination rate | 7-14 days. |
Optimal landing time | Spring (end of March or beginning of April). |
In the United States, Miracle-Gro® Seed Starting Potting Mix, developed specifically for the rapid development of the root system, is used to grow seedlings. Replace this mixture with a combination of garden soil with humus, previously sifted, not too dry, but not wet (crumbly). A quick germination of seeds will be provided by the Epin preparation.
How to plant seeds for seedlings?
Step 1. We prepare the necessary number of cassettes for seedlings.
Important! Winsell seeds are not recommended to be grown in peat tablets or glasses.The optimal solution is classic seedling boxes made of plastic or compact "snails".
Step 2. We fill cells of cartridges with soil. We slightly seal it so that 6-10 mm remain to the upper edge of the cell.
Step 3. Pour the seeds from the bag onto the saucer, grab one seed with tweezers and lay on the ground surface. No more than two seeds can be put in one cell.
Step 4. We fill the seeds with loose soil and spray with water.
Step 5. We close the cassette with a lid or foil, put it in a warm place for 2-3 days, for example, on top of the kitchen cabinet.
Step 6. When the seeds hatch and green sprouts appear from the ground, you need to remove the cover and put the seedlings in a bright place. If the natural lighting is poor, it is better to organize illumination with phytolamps.
Step 7. Water the seedlings under the root. We make sure that the earth is moist, but not waterlogged.
Pick
Plants are advised to dive when they reach a height of 4 inches or 10 centimeters. In order not to measure the sprouts daily with a ruler, it is better to focus on the presence of real leaves. As soon as the third true leaf grows, the seedlings are ready for picking.
The soil in the cassettes is watered abundantly. We prepare 0.5 liter glasses. We fill them with half the earth. From the cassette we take the sprout together with a lump of earth and put it in a glass. We fall asleep soil, a little ramming.
Important! During the dive, you can not damage the root system of the plant, including pinching the root.
Planting seedlings in a greenhouse
Planting seedlings in the ground is recommended when the height of the plants is more than 10 inches (25.4 cm). In this case, one can also focus on the presence of true leaves in the plant. Before planting, each seedling should have more than seven true leaves.
A few days before planting, seedlings must be tempered in a cool, cool room or in a warm greenhouse. The hardening time is gradually increased from 15 minutes to 3-4 hours.
Planting seedlings in an unheated greenhouse is recommended when the daytime air temperature exceeds 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Celsius. It is advisable that 2-3 weeks pass from the moment of the last spring frosts.
Ground requirements:
- fertile, low acidity;
- good drainage.
You can check the acidity of the soil using Ph strips. The optimum acidity is between 6 and 7. If the acidity level is below 6, add dolomite lime. If Ph is greater than 7, then granular sulfur is introduced into the soil.
It is recommended to fertilize the beds with compost or rotted manure, thoroughly loosen it.
Recommendation! When forming beds for tomatoes, leave a space of 120 cm between them.
For fertilizing plants during transplantation manufacturer recommended one-time administration of the drug TOMATOBLAST. Granular fertilizer is Packed in 1.8 kg plastic jars and equipped with a measuring spoon. Top dressing is made by simply scattering two measured spoons of the dry preparation around the stem and pouring water from the watering can on top. This fertilizer has a number of positive qualities: the components of the drug are carefully balanced, do not burn the roots of plants, are environmentally friendly, increase the resistance of the culture to diseases and pests.
Tomato care in the greenhouse
The best yields of Winsel tomato yields are achieved by forming a bush of one or two stems. When planting, experienced gardeners recommend that you adhere to the following rules:
- work must be done with gloves. To exclude the transfer of a possible infection from bush to bush, gloves should be rinsed in a potassium permanganate solution after removing stepchildren from each stem;
- removal of stepchildren is best done in the morning and in good weather;
- stepsons who have reached a length of 4-5 cm are subject to removal;
- so that a new sprout does not grow at the site of the removed stepson, the sprout is not broken off at the base, but nipped, leaving a short stalk up to 1.5 cm long;
- stepsons should not be allowed to grow longer than 7 cm. Removing such shoots is a stress for the plant;
- stepsoning is not carried out on the day of fertilizing and the next day after that. It is better if after feeding passes 3 days.
So that the stems do not break off under the weight of heavy fruits, they are tied with twine to the supports. The height of the supports is at least 150 cm.
Winsell tomatoes are sensitive to soil moisture. Watering the plants is carried out with warm, settled water in the morning. It is forbidden to spray moisture on the leaves of plants.
Fertilizing tomatoes is recommended every 2-3 weeks with Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble Tomato Plant Food. For 4 liters of water, take 1 tablespoon of fertilizer. Ready solution tomatoes are watered every 2 weeks.
To maintain optimum soil moisture and prevent weed growth, it is worth mulching a bed of straw, hay or mowed grass around the stems.
Harvesting
The first crop is harvested after 60-90 days (this is an approximate timeframe; in the middle zone of Russia, the ripening period of the crop will be several days longer).
On a note! To accelerate the ripening of tomatoes, experienced gardeners remove the lower leaves. To do this, below the brush with already grown to the right size, but still green tomatoes rip off all the leaves. You cannot delete more than three sheets at a time.
It is better not to pick ripened tomatoes, but to cut them off with branches with scissors.
Large tomatoes should be stored in a cool, dark place, preferably dry. If the fruits are individually wrapped in paper, this will extend their shelf life and shelf life.
Reviews
Alevtina, Rostov-on-Don
“Winsal” became a find for me. At my own risk, I ordered seeds from a collector Valentina Goncharova. There were 10 seeds in a paper bag. I put them on wet cotton pads, waited until they hatch, and then dropped them off in the “snail”. Transplanted seedlings in the greenhouse. My tomatoes ripened longer than the stated terms. I would attribute the variety to mid-late rather than early ripening. The taste of tomatoes, of course, is beyond praise, very delicate aromatic pulp, I am 100% satisfied.
Vitaliy, Krasnodar Territory
This variety has a very high yield. Tomatoes themselves weigh 300-500 grams. Children sent me seeds (they live and work in the USA), I ordered fertilizers and soil separately on Amazon. The pulp of tomatoes is sugar, watermelon type. I gathered seeds from the last harvest, I will still grow this large-fruited variety.
