20.01.2018 Tomatoes

Recently, original tomato varieties have become popular, as consumers appreciate not only the taste, but also the aesthetic appearance. Tomato "Golden Fleece" - one of these varieties.

Characteristic and Description

Tomatoes "Golden Fleece" belong to the early varieties, as the average ripening period is about 80-90 days from the date of planting on seedlings. The variety is determinant, reaches a height of 40-50 cm, and in closed ground it can grow up to 60 cm. The bushes are compact, leaves are of a standard size, dark green in color.

Fruits of the original ovoid shape with a small spout-process below form on the bushes. The color of the fruits upon reaching maturity is golden yellow, due to which the variety got its name. The average weight of the fruit is 90-100 g. From one bush you can collect up to 1.5 kg of fruit, yield from 1 square. m is about 10 kg.

The variety has been officially included in the state register of vegetable varieties of the Russian Federation since 2008 and has since firmly established itself in the beds of gardeners. Designed for cultivation, both in open and closed ground. The growing regions are the Southern and Middle Lane of Russia, however, in closed ground it can be successfully grown in cooler regions.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The obvious advantages of the Golden Fleece variety are:

  • early ripening;
  • original presentation of the fruit;
  • tomatoes have good taste;
  • the bushes are small and do not require pinching, garters to the supports;
  • resistant to major diseases that affect tomatoes.

The disadvantages of the Golden Fleece variety were not revealed, if only a relatively small yield can be called a disadvantage. However, in this case, it should be borne in mind that the bushes of this variety are compact in size, so the yield is relatively high relative to this size.

Features of the cultivation of the variety "Golden Fleece"

Like most other tomato varieties, the Golden Fleece is thermophilic and in the climatic conditions of Russia it is grown only by the seedling method. But, before planting seeds for seedlings, a thorough pre-sowing preparation should be carried out, which will become the key to a successful and healthy crop in the future.

In the agricultural technology of tomato cultivation, the following stages are distinguished:

  1. Seed preparation.
  2. Preparation of soil for seedlings.
  3. Planting seeds and seedling care.
  4. Planting seedlings in open ground and care before harvesting.

Seed preparation

Harvesting of seeds for the next season begins at the end of the current season. You should select the most ripened fruits, wash and rinse them well. In this state, the tomatoes are left for 2-3 days, and then washed in warm water through a fine sieve. Seeds are dried under the sun on a windowsill and left for storage in the winter in a fabric or paper bag.

One month before planting, the seeds must be calibrated. The easiest way is to manually select obviously damaged, mechanically damaged and diseased seeds. You can also prepare a solution of kitchen salt by dissolving 1 tbsp. spoon in 1 liter of water. Seeds are poured into the resulting solution for 5 minutes. During this time, unsuitable seeds will float to the surface, while good ones will remain at the bottom.

It is equally important to treat the seeds with growth stimulants, such as Immunocytophyte, Ideal, Kornevin, Epin-Extra. It is necessary to place the seeds in a bag of light tissue and immerse its solution for up to 6 hours. After that, the seeds are not washed, but simply dried well.

Important! Instead of growth stimulants, you can use a solution of 1 tbsp. tablespoons of ash per liter of water, because ash contains about 30 nutrients.

It is equally important to disinfect the seeds, because pathogens can remain on them. For treatment, fungicides Acrobat, Quadris, Ridomil and others are suitable.

3-5 days before planting, the seeds should be hardened. Processed and well-dried grains are left on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, where the coldest air falls. Hardening should begin, starting with half an hour and bringing the total time to several hours. After removing from the refrigerator, the seeds must be placed in a warm room.

Soil preparation for seedlings

As a basis for the mixture, you can take ordinary soil from the garden, in equal parts mixed with humus, peat, sand and soddy soil. Additionally, 0.5 cups of ash can be added to a bucket of such a mixture.

For the prevention of seedling diseases, the soil is sprayed with fungicide solutions. Instead, you can shed it with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Instead of chemical treatment, you can apply heat by calcining the soil in the oven at a temperature of 100 ºС

Important! The processing temperature should not exceed 100 ºС, otherwise the nutritional properties of the soil are completely lost.

Prepared soil is laid out in pots or other prepared containers. However, before laying the soil, the pots must be washed with a solution of laundry soap and held for about 20 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate. Now the container is clean and disinfected, so it’s ready to lay the soil for seedlings.

Important! Pots for seedlings must have a drainage hole.

Seeding and Seedling Care

Since seedlings of the Golden Fleece variety are planted in open ground at the age of 50 days, seeds for seedlings are planted in mid-March. Before planting, the ground is shed with warm water, and they are also fed with a small amount of complex mineral fertilizer.

The seeds are buried in the soil to a depth of 2 cm, and then the pots are covered with a film to create the optimum temperature for growth. With the advent of the first shoots, the film is removed. The picking of the Golden Fleece variety is carried out at the stage of the appearance of two true leaves.

Seedling care consists in timely watering and loosening of the earth. Watering should be sufficient so that the soil does not dry out, but not abundant.

Planting seedlings in open ground and caring for the bushes before harvesting

The preparation of the site takes place under the conditions of observing crop rotation rules: you cannot choose peppers, tomatoes and other nightshade as predecessors on the site. Best tomato grows after root crops, legumes, cabbage, cucumbers, greens. In autumn, the plot is fertilized with humus, which is smelled into the ground.

Before transplanting seedlings in the spring, the soil is cleared of already emerging weeds, and the beds are necessarily loosened. Seedlings are planted closer to the end of May or early June. Planting pattern - 70 cm between rows and 35 cm between bushes in a row. Wells for planting are shed with water and fertilized with a small amount of fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus.

Further care of seedlings consists in timely weeding and loosening of the soil. The Golden Fleece responds well to hilling. Watering should be carried out 1-2 times a week, and if it rains or the weather is cold, it is better to reduce the number of waterings. If possible, should be watered with warm water under the root.You can not water the stems, leaves and ovaries, otherwise it is fraught with fungal diseases.

Important! As a prophylaxis, the bushes should be treated 3 times with antifungal fungicides with breaks between treatments of 10 days.

Fertilizing tomatoes is carried out 2-3 times during the growing season. For this, solutions of mullein or bird droppings in a ratio of 1:10 are suitable. It is also good to use mineral fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Disease resistance

The main pests of tomatoes are the Colorado potato beetle, aphids, and spider mites. Tomatoes, like all nightshade ones, are susceptible to such fungal diseases as late blight, alternniosis, fusariosis. The Golden Fleece variety is considered resistant to the most common diseases on this list, but preventive treatments for bushes will not be superfluous. The main prevention will be compliance with the rules of agricultural technology, such as moderate watering, timely weeding and loosening of the soil.

Thus, the Golden Fleece tomato is an excellent unpretentious variety with a good view and taste, and given its unpretentiousness, it is suitable for beginner growers.

Tomatoes are my favorite vegetable consumed in the summer. It is not only useful, but also always a decoration for salads. The Golden Fleece variety is very interesting for its original shape and color. It also has an excellent and rather unusual sweetish taste. It is easy to grow even for beginners, as it is very unpretentious. I recommend for growing for beginner growers.

I cultivate the Golden Fleece variety in my greenhouse. The bushes are compact and easy to care for, the plus I think is that they do not require garter and pinching. As for its size, the plant is very fruitful, the fruits are juicy and tasty. It gives good results after heavy dressing.
