Dixon was obtained by amateur selection, the well-known amateur breeder A.V. Burdak worked on it. “Atlant” and “Angelica” were used as parent varieties. In the course of work, a new frost-resistant and high-yielding variety was born, which gained popularity in a short time.

"Dixon" can be reckoned among early ripening varieties, the crop ripens after 105-120 days after the opening of the buds. In the southern regions, ripe berries can be enjoyed already in mid-August, and in the middle lane in early September. The bushes are medium-sized, have a well-developed root system, powerful and strong. Under favorable conditions, the shoots mature perfectly and reach a length of four meters. Leaves are emerald green, medium in size. The flowers are bisexual, and this pleases many gardeners, because in this case there is no need to plant pollinators.

Bunches are large, elongated, weighing from 600 grams to one kilogram. Subject to agricultural technology, gardeners are able to grow larger brushes weighing 1.5 kilograms. The berries are oval, large, one weighs from 16 to 21 grams. The skin is dense, yellow-pink. The pulp crunches when eaten, it contains a large amount of juice. The grapes taste very sweet, with fruity notes.

A distinctive feature of Dixon is its high yield, one adult plant with proper care gives about 20 kilograms of the crop. Bunches can hang on a bush for a long time, while taste and marketability do not deteriorate. After the breakdown, the brushes are stored in a cool, dry room for up to 3 months. The transportability of bunches is also at a high level, they can be transported over long distances without damage.

Interesting!
The branch of a six-month-old seedling should be 6-7 mm in diameter.

In the southern regions, the vine can do without shelter for the winter. "Dixon" can be attributed to frost-resistant varieties, it tolerates cold up to -24 degrees Celsius. Berries have a universal use, they can be eaten fresh and processed. Winemakers often use them to make dessert wines. Tasty juices are also obtained from fruits.

Advantages and disadvantages

Over the years of the existence of Dixon, gardeners have already managed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the variety. The hybrid has a lot of privileges. As for the flaws, the variety has not been well studied, and the serious disadvantages of Dixon have not yet been noticed.

Benefits:

  • winter hardiness;
  • the possibility of transportation and long-term storage;
  • rich taste of berries;
  • attractive presentation;
  • high yields;
  • lack of need for landing of a pollinator;
  • universal application;
  • high survival rate of planting material;
  • excellent immunity;

Landing and care

Grapes are planted in spring or early autumn, in dry, warm weather, in a prepared landing pit.Drainage is placed on the bottom of the pit, the rest of the space is filled with fertile soil mixed with sand and humus. At first, a young bush needs careful care, regular watering, loosening the soil and removing weeds. Later, watering is reduced, spending it only 3-4 times per season, depending on the weather. It is better to mulch the soil, mulch will inhibit the growth of weed grass, and retain moisture, there will also be no need for loosening the soil.

Important!
For planting grapes, it is necessary to choose well-lit areas.

Annually, the vine is recommended to be cut into 7-8 eyes, given that the maximum load on the bush should be 35-40 eyes. Like any culture, grapes love fertile soil rich in nutrients. Therefore, three times per season it is necessary to make fertilizers, both mineral complexes and organic substances are suitable.

Throughout the season, gardeners are advised to remove shading foliage and shoots. And tie large and heavy brushes. When the leaves begin to fall off, they should be removed immediately. Before winter, water-loading irrigation will be useful for grapes, this procedure will help the plant recover after fruiting and prepare for winter. Despite the frost resistance, the first few years it is better to cover the vine, for this they use non-woven covering materials, foliage, sawdust and spruce branches.

Disease

Dixon is one of the disease-resistant varieties; it is almost not susceptible to common infections. However, if the summer was rainy, it is necessary to carry out preventive measures that will help protect the bushes from damage by gray rot, bacteriosis or moniliasis. It is not difficult to detect the presence of the fungus, in case of damage to the foliage, vine and fruits, plaque appears, the berries can begin to rot.

As for pests, they rarely attack plants, but safety precautions will not do much harm. To scare away birds, you can build a scarecrow or cover the vineyard with a protective net. In the case of a large number of wasps in the cluster, they are hidden in special bags.

Harvesting and storage of crops

For storage, fully ripened brushes are cut. To do this, use garden shears, the tool must be disinfected. It is better to try not to touch the berries, they are covered with a wax coating that protects them from damage. The brushes are sorted out, discarding damaged ones, and neatly stacked in boxes. Store grapes in a cool dry place, periodically sorting it out.

Conclusion

"Dixon" is a high-yielding variety of Ukrainian selection. In just a few years, he managed to gain recognition not only from gardeners, but also from farmers. Unpretentious care, disease resistance and excellent yield indicators make it possible to grow it not only for yourself, but also for commercial purposes.

Reviews

Stanislava

Dixon is one of the youngest varieties on my site, but during this time I have already managed to fall in love with it. The berries are very tasty, sweet, and children like it. I hope that next year I will make juice from grapes, as so far the whole crop is quickly eaten. My bushes did not hurt, pests do not bother. In spring and summer I carry out standard preventive treatment with Bordeaux liquid and copper sulphate.

Valeria

Sister of Dixon grapes was brought to me by a sister from Ukraine, she praised this variety very much. This year the first crop was taken, just two brushes, but they are insanely delicious. I didn’t cut it in the first year, I plan to do it this year. She hid for the winter, although I live in the Krasnodar Territory, I heard that young plants are very afraid of even small frosts. In autumn, she sprayed the vine with an antifungal agent, in spring with Bordeaux liquid. No problems have arisen yet.
