Sphinx Grapes

There are many grape varieties currently known. They are improving, being refined. Breeders and winegrowers are studying the properties of certain varieties and are trying to bring out such that the grapes can bear fruit in any corner of our country. One of these new varieties was the Sphinx.

General grade information

"Sphinx" is a type of grape that belongs to the table. There are no individual problems in cultivation. That is why it is recommended to be used in breeding for beginner growers.

“Sphinx” is a hybrid of the Strashinsky and Timur varieties. The homeland of the Sphinx is Ukraine, the founder - the breeder who gave birth to a new variety was the winegrower Zagorulko VV. And what is most interesting, he was not a professional or scientist. Zagarulko V.V. just loved vine growing from childhood.

Characteristics of a bush, tree, foliage

"Sphinx" refers to high-yielding varieties, with dark berries, begins to bear fruit quite early. The bushes are large, grows very quickly, the ripening of the vine occurs at 95-100%. The main sheet is large, neat. It calmly experiences winter cold up to - 23 degrees Celsius. Hot weather also has a negative effect on the plant. But! It is worth protecting the Sphinx bushes from the draft, so when choosing a place for planting grape bushes, it is worth approaching especially carefully.

Important!
Sphinx is immune to most known diseases.

Fetal characteristics

Flowering occurs at a later time, from about the twentieth of May. The main influence on the speed of singing berries have climatic and weather conditions. Basically, grapes fully ripen by the last days of August.

In their shape, the sphinx grape brushes are conical; the mass does not slightly reach 1,000 grams. But there are individuals who reached a weight of about 1,500 grams. The berries themselves are large, weighing about 10 grams, the color is dark, blue. The main disadvantage is the long ripening of the fruit. After the berries instantly deteriorate and rot.

The peel of the berry is dense, if you bite, you can hear a characteristic crunch. Inside, the berry is juicy and dense. Taste characteristics are classic, but there is an opinion that grapes have their own aroma and taste. "Sphinx" refers to wagons, but mostly eat it fresh.

Variety Productivity

If the conditions for growing are close to ideal, then you can collect from one bush from 8 to 12 kilograms. Productivity can be attributed to the average, but it is quite stable.

This grape variety is characterized by the fact that you can hardly find unripe grapes. This happens only in one case, if the summer was very rainy. Ripe clusters should be collected within 14 days. Sphinx begins to bear fruit in the third year.

After harvesting, it is placed in a cool place and stored for about two weeks.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Sphinx is endowed with the following positive qualities:

You may be interested in:
  1. Ripens fast enough.
  2. Harvest at a high level.
  3. The berries are quite large.
  4. Does not need thorough care.
  5. Endowed with great taste.
  6. It tolerates transportation well.

In the middle bands of Russia and Ukraine, the ripening period is determined by a period of not more than 100 days. As for warmer regions, berries ripen at the age of 80 days. On a bunch you rarely see a small berry. Any quality soil material is suitable for cultivation.

An exception!!!
Strongly acidic soil. On this basis, it is necessary to neutralize.

With all the characteristic advantages of the Sphinx, there are also disadvantages:

  1. Berries do not look beautiful.
  2. It is prone to the fact that the peel of the berry may crack.
  3. Can get mildew, oidium.
  4. A certain level of humidity is required.

Pollination

Flowering occurs abundantly, and what characterizes the Sphinx on the positive side is that it occurs with flowers of both sexes. Pollination of the ovaries occurs independently.

Resistance to diseases and pests, adverse conditions

The article has repeatedly said that the Sphinx is a grape variety that is resistant to most diseases known and fatal to grapes. It is worth processing from mildew and oidiums, it is also necessary to avoid drafts and high humidity. Since the variety is frost-resistant, in the southern regions it is not necessary to cover it. In colder climates, shelter is required.

Important!
Increased resistance to many diseases of grapes!

Features of agricultural technology varieties

The care and cultivation of the Sphinx is similar to other varieties. It features excellent rooting function. Since it belongs to early grapes, but in especially cold regions it needs to be covered for wintering.

"Sphinx" easily takes root in a new place. Therefore, it is great for breeding. If grapes are planted by means of planting a chubuk or seedling, then you need to remember that the Sphinx does not like the wind. A great place would be to plant against the wall, which will protect the young plant from the winds. The best time for planting grapes in the ground is April, but this is only for the southern latitudes. Where a colder and longer spring should be delayed with the landing of the Sphinx. The plant is planted in a prepared hole to a depth of about 20 centimeters. When planting several plants of this variety, it is worth considering that the distance between them should be at least 200 centimeters.

Watering grapes

Sphinx grapes must be watered at regular intervals, as well as fertilizing with various fertilizers. An excellent material for fertilizer is ash.

When spraying grape bushes from pests and diseases, the plant growth time is taken into account. So, in early spring with the help of copper sulfate, and during the beginning of the growing season, a drug such as Riomil Gold is used.

Important!
Cutting off unnecessary branches of the bush is carried out in the spring, but before the buds swell. But in the summer, shoots that are not needed are removed.

Before wintering, the bush is completely cut off, but about six buds are left on the branches and then covered with material.
