21.12.2017 Dahlia

Mingus Joshua fringed dahlia is one of the most popular types of dahlias. This flower has been growing for almost 3 months, starting in the summer and ending in late autumn. Gardeners appreciate it for its unpretentiousness and spectacular appearance.

The Mingus series has several subspecies: for example, the Mingus Gregory dahlia is lilac in color, while the Joshua attracts attention with rich lemon petals. We will analyze in more detail this type of dahlia and its variations.

Description and characteristic of the flower Dahlia Mingus Joshua

Dahlia "Mingus Joshua" bred in the United States in the 1990s. Breeders made great efforts, trying to develop fringed varieties with high resistance to cold and large flowers. The goal was achieved - most of the Mingus varieties give inflorescences with a diameter of more than 20 cm, all flowers are not afraid of night cooling and bloom well even in autumn. The bushes, regardless of the subspecies, grow small: up to 120 cm in height. Parts require a mandatory garter, without which the stem can break due to the large weight of inflorescences or gusts of wind.

The bushes are unpretentious. They do not require constant top dressing, although poorly take root in acidic soils. If your site is dominated by acidic soils, you need to add peat or a similar fertilizer to them before planting.

The plant constantly needs to be watered. It is advisable not to touch the stems, inflorescences and leaves. The best option is watering under the root from a large watering can. This allows you to saturate the bush without damaging its top, and a small pressure of water from a watering can does no harm to the roots.

Advice! To facilitate the watering process, you can use a garden hose with a small pressure. Remember that the stream should not wash the ground from the roots of the bush, otherwise the Mingus dahlia will quickly die.

Light-loving plant. Dahlia grows well in open areas and is not prone to sunburn. For a normal vegetative cycle and abundant flowering, a bush needs at least 6 hours of light per day. Even residents of the northern regions of Russia can easily satisfy this need for a dahlia by planting it in a prominent place.

When landing, you need to be wary of choosing a height. Sprouts should not be planted where they can break under the influence of wind. It is better to prepare places for planting plants in small lowlands, but with a sufficient level of illumination.

Planting varieties should be carried out by digging tubers. The plant holds well in the autumn cold, but will not be able to develop normally if it encounters cold at the developmental stage. Therefore, for landing, you need to wait for a favorable period: the end of May or the beginning of June. In years with a cold summer, it is better to postpone the burial of tubers until mid-June or leave them until next year.

In order for the stem to grow strong and give many leaves, you need to plant the tubers at an average distance - the gap between the planting points should be 60-70 cm. You need to bury the tubers 10-15 cm.

Flower Varieties Dahlia Mingus Joshua

Breeders from the United States in the period from 1990 to 1997 bred 6 species of the Mingus variety. The most common:

  • Mingus Alex;
  • “Mingus Joshua”;
  • “Mingus Jackie”;
  • “Mingus Gregory”;
  • Mingus Randy.

The last, least popular is the Mingus Tony Dahlia. This flower is not so in demand among gardeners, because it differs in a very small size of inflorescences - from 10 to 15 cm, subject to the rules of agricultural technology.But the flower has a pleasant pinkish tinge with a splash of a darker color, so it is reasonable to grow it for sale or to create floral arrangements.

Varieties differ from each other in terms of heat lovingness, the size of the bush and flowers, and the rules of care. The main difference between different species is the color of the petals. It ranges from the deep wine of the Mingus Alex Dahlia to the lemon yellow of the Mingus Joshua Dahlia.

The detailed description below will help you choose the type of flower that is most suitable for your site. When considering, it is necessary to take into account the main factors of choice - the difficulty of leaving, the characteristics of planting, the color of the petals, the size of the inflorescences, growth. It should be remembered that the plants are not so much different, and all of them can be easily grown in the middle lane.

[/ good]Fact! Shrubs with small flowers require less maintenance and bloom better. Therefore, if you do not buy tubers for the further sale of flowers, it is better to choose medium-sized options. [/ Good]

Mingus Alex

Due to the rich wine shade of the petals, Alex is often confused with peonies. However, frequent soft petals differ from this plant. The flowers reach large sizes up to 23-25 cm.

Please note: Large inflorescences can be obtained by planting a bush in a sunny place. In the shade, “Alex” or any other variety will develop more slowly, it will not surprise you with a bright shade.

The growth of the bush does not exceed 100 cm. Dahlia "Mingus Alex" does not need to be additionally tied, despite the large size of the flower cup. This action is justified only in places for which a sharp squally wind is typical.

If you buy the grade "Alex", you need to pay special attention to the rules of planting. You can’t plant tubers too close together. When burying, leave 2 to 3 centimeters of the neck above the ground. If you place the tubers too close, there is a risk of getting inexpressive flowering.

Advantages of the type:

  • saturated color;
  • very large flower;
  • low stalk;
  • unpretentious (does not require garter and top dressing);
  • blooms for more than 3 months.

Disadvantages:

  • grows poorly with large crowding of plants, the presence of weeds or pests;
  • costs more than other species.

If you, as a gardener, can pay enough attention to the seedlings and provide them with regular watering, you will receive unsurpassed red flowers for home decoration or for sale. Cut branches stand for a long time in the water.

Mingus Joshua

The flower resembles a large dandelion. It has the same bright yellow color, the only difference in the color scheme - the shade of the dahlia is softer and more noble. Dahlia "Mingus Joshua" - a symbol of summer and the sun. He will decorate any home, making it more optimistic.

The size of the inflorescence is medium, from 15 to 20 cm. But the bright color compensates for the lack of size. The volume of inflorescences is given by petals of a non-standard shape: at the ends they are split in two and gently bent. Because of this feature, the plant is called "fringed."

  • non-standard form of petals;
  • delicate lemon shade;
  • relatively large flowers.

Negative:

  • thermophilic;
  • requires support.

Mingus Jackie

During flowering, flowers up to 20 cm in diameter can be found. Jackie is only 1 meter tall, but nevertheless a garter is required. Rigid support can be used, taut ropes are not recommended.

Petals are pink and red. The peculiarity of the subspecies is the yellow core. It is especially noticeable during summer flowering.In cold weather, Mingus Jackie dahlia grows reluctantly, does not give large petals. Therefore, with the sudden onset of night frosts, the bush needs to be covered. Dahlia "Mingus Jackie" holds well after cutting.

Positive aspects of the subspecies:

  • suitable for cutting;
  • large inflorescences.

Disadvantages:

  • afraid of the cold;
  • requires garter.

Mingus Gregory

This species is the record holder for inflorescences. They reach 25 cm even without special feeding and long daylight hours. The variety was bred one of the last in 1997.

Petals are painted in a delicate lilac color. The core is reminiscent of the Jackie variety - it also has a yellowish tint. However, it is almost imperceptible, it is not indicated in the description of nodules during the sale.

Dahlia “Mingus Gregory” more often than others grows for cutting due to its large size. It is considered resistant to prolonged exposure to water (after cutting), some stems even give roots.

This species is unpretentious and easier to tolerate cold than Jackie.

Grade advantages:

  • not afraid of the cold;
  • suitable for floristry;
  • huge inflorescences.

Minuses:

  • often breaks due to squally wind;
  • requires garter.

Mingus Randy

Mingus Randy Dahlia is the smallest. Along with Tony, it does not grow more than 10-15 cm (flowers). But this shortcoming is covered with a delicate lilac color. From the center along the petals there are bright veins - they are first white, then gently turning into light lilac. Sometimes in the center you can find a yellow color.

Does not tolerate acidic soil. Achievement of growth of 90-100 cm, a garter is optional. It requires a lot of sun and water.

Note! In the market for floriculture products, you can find different variations of "Randy" and other varieties. Variations with a more uniform or more variegated color are sold.

Benefits:

  • does not require top dressing;
  • does not require garter;
  • interesting double color.

Disadvantages:

  • small size;
  • exactingness to moisture and light.

Irina 76 years old, Izhevsk

Every year I buy a new dahlia variety to decorate my garden. Last year it was Jackie, this year it was Randy. They grow well on the sunny side of the site, but can stop growing if peat is not added to the soil. In rainy times, you practically do not need to take care of them, and in case of heat it is enough to leave the hose, aiming at the soil nearby, for half an hour a day.

Dmitry 52 years old, Tula

Landed "Gregory" and "Joshua" in late May (it was still cold). "Gregory" did not grow, sorry. But "Joshua" quickly reached maximum growth and gave buds. Bloomed, indeed, until mid-autumn. The flowers stood perfectly in a vase.

Galina 43 years old, Kaluga

I’m growing Mingus Randy for a cut. Great variety, only has several variations - to find the most beautiful, with lots of white, I had to search the entire Internet. One bush allows you to add 10-20 bouquets for summer and autumn. Flowers look good both in a summer cottage and in a vase.

When choosing a dahlia, you can not limit yourself. Varieties are very similar, and even with non-differentiated care, the bushes will bloom profusely and for a long time. The areas on which flowers of different shades are composed look great — lilac with lemon or pink with lilac. Wine "Alex" is best planted aside or next to peonies in order to achieve a pleasant view of the site.
