Low-growing dahlia varieties are always popular among gardeners. They will perfectly decorate any site, give it a bright flowering appearance.
Plant height depends on agricultural conditions and climate. Before all, the lowest varieties bloom.
The most famous variety is Dahlia "Happy Guys". This is a combination of simple and double flowers of a wide variety of colors. "Piccolo" - semi-double multi-colored flowers. “Figaro” - looks like small chrysanthemums.
The height of the Goldband variety does not exceed 40 cm and has yellow non-double flowers. “Rosaband” blooms with pink-lilac inflorescences no higher than 50 cm. “Purple” blossoms with purple-carmine flowers. Bushes of non-double inflorescences of various shades were combined into the Mignon group.
Short dahlias are characterized by long and plentiful flowering. But they cannot winter in the open ground due to their thermophilicity.
Before planting a dahlia in open ground, the soil in the flower bed must be carefully prepared. Namely - it is good to dig, to add rotted manure, mineral fertilizers. And in sandy soils, boron and zinc should be added.
You can grow dahlias and seeds and seedlings. The seed method is not as popular as the seedling method. In our climatic conditions, there is a risk that the seeds will not sprout at all. Landing occurs around the third decade of May, but then the threat of frost remains. In warm and moderately humid weather, seeds can hatch after 5-7 days, and bright heads will bloom in 2.5-3 months.
Flowers planted through seedlings will open much earlier and will delight you until the frosts. They begin to sow in March - April in seedlings filled with a mixture of peat and perlite. Cover with a film. At a favorable temperature of 23 -25 degrees, seedlings can appear in a week. Next, the seedlings dive and air. Try not to overmoisten the soil!
Dive better in peat pots. It is more convenient to plant them in the ground. Before planting, the earth must be disinfected with a solution of manganese or steamed soil. The substrate should contain peat and sand in equal proportions and at least half of the turf land.
A week or two before transplanting into open ground, seedlings begin to harden. They take them outside in sunny weather, gradually increasing the time. Well, if you can simultaneously lower the temperature in the room in which the seedlings grew.
As for the landing time, it is better to focus on the end of May, when the threat of frost passes and the soil warms up enough so that all the work is not in vain. Low dahlias are unpretentious in leaving. But they have certain requirements: they like sunny places, rare but plentiful watering and top dressing. Do not like loosening, it is better to mulch the soil. Do not require pinching and tying.
