Growing rules: planting and care in the open ground

The variety is quite demanding to care, so all the rules must be strictly followed.

Potatoes are planted in open ground in May. Before planting, make sure that the seed does not rot and is not sick. RedScarlet can be cut into pieces when landing: the main thing is that at least one eye remains on each piece. Plant root crops according to the scheme 60/35 or 75/35. It is important to leave enough space between the bushes, otherwise the planting will die. Planting depth is average, about 6-8 cm. The variety can not be germinated: it grows well even if planted immediately in the soil.

Before planting, carefully loosen all beds and form ridges. They need to be fertilized with nitrogen substances, and in the holes to fill wood ash. Some experts recommend adding humus and onion peel as well.

The first shoots should appear 14-20 days after planting. The first crop may appear after 45 days. In general, the ripening period of RedScarlet takes up to 80 days.

From the moment of planting, you need to carefully care for the potatoes.

  1. Carefully monitor the bushes for diseases and pests. What parameters you should pay attention to first of all, you will learn below.
  2. The first time you need to weed the beds a week after the appearance of the first sprouts. Then you should lay down the ground, increasing the ridges to about 20 cm. You need to hive the bushes 2-3 times for the entire growth period.
  3. Watering is done three times: before flowering, after it begins and after 9-10 days after flowering.
  4. Fertilizers are also applied 2-3 times during the growing season. The first time - about a month after planting, the second - when buds appear, the third - after flowering. It is recommended to use a mixture of urea (2 tsp), potassium sulfate (2 tsp) and superphosphate (4 tsp) as a fertilizer.
  5. The remedy for the Colorado potato beetle should be used 3-4 days before flowering.
  6. 7-10 days before harvesting, you need to remove the tops.

Possible diseases and pests and methods of dealing with them

The RedScarlet variety is resistant to golden nematode, cancer, late blight of tubers and some viruses. Otherwise, it has averaged indicators of susceptibility to diseases and does not require special care. However, low immunity to certain diseases is observed. Let's take a closer look at them.

  1. Late blight. Brown rot often destroys potato plantings. The reasons for the appearance: the simplest mushroom, which switches to healthy root crops from infected fruits and soil. Especially quickly the disease spreads in warm, humid weather. It is easy to notice it: brown spots with a slightly noticeable white fluffy coating appear on the lower, and then on the upper leaves. Brown stripes appear on the stem. To combat late blight of the tops helps spraying bushes with fungicides and other chemicals. Alternative methods of struggle are absolutely ineffective in the treatment of RedScarlet from the disease.
  2. Common scab. Small spots appear on the fruits, similar to sores. Their edges are dry, and the color is brown or yellow. The disease practically does not appear on the leaves, stems and roots of potatoes, it affects only the fruits. Methods of treatment: poisons and pesticides. It is very difficult to overcome the scab, so it is advisable to use preventive measures: fertilizers with an acidic environment, observing crop rotation, and using siderates.
  3. Alternariosis. Dry brown spots in the form of circles on the leaves are the main sign of the appearance of a harmful fungus. Usually they appear 14-20 days before flowering. It is important to notice this disease in time, otherwise it will switch to tubers, and most of the crop may die. Again, it is necessary to fight using chemical means: Mancozeb, Thanos, Polyram and Acrobat MC are considered the most suitable.

Do not forget that the best way to fight diseases is competent prevention. With proper care, the risk of illness will be minimal.

Harvest Storage Rules

Tubers do not lose their presentation and taste during long-term storage. Before cleaning the storehouse, they should be carefully sorted and disposed of rotten and diseased fruits. RedScarlet should be stored in a cool room with good ventilation: dampness in the storehouse is unacceptable. The fruits are practically not afraid of blows, so that they are also resistant to traffic. They have high keeping quality, so the harvest will delight you until next summer.

Reviews

Vegetable growers, discussing RedScarlet on the forums, most often talk about the variety in a positive way. Here are some real reviews.

Elena from Tomsk writes:

“It sounds loud, but I consider myself almost an expert on potatoes. I love it, it’s better not to find dishes, I grow and cook constantly. For me, its taste and presence are important. I think that the best potato is starchy, crumbly, large, even, with yellowish flesh. She planted a kilogram of RedScarlet for testing, and then collected four 12-liter buckets. All fruits, as a selection: large, smooth, dark pink. Growing up as usual, without any special care and awe.Immediately after harvesting, I cooked several potatoes - delicious! Everything as I love. Now I’m just planting him. But I didn’t find any shortcomings. ”

Nikolai from Stavropol writes:

“I never bothered with gardens, but then I decided to plant some potatoes. I dug up a small piece of bad earth with pieces of bricks and concrete, sprinkled with ash and bought 3 kg of RedScarlet potatoes (for only 70 rubles). Not particularly courted, only when the Colorado potato beetle wound up, took some measures. Although after the beetles the whole tops of leaves fell and turned black, but the crop came out hoo. With 50 bushes (3 kg), 21.4 kg of potatoes were produced. So think about how much you can collect, for example, from one hundredth, if I had a 4 by 4 meter section. The potato is delicious, it turned out good. ”
