In order to understand when to harvest garlic in the Moscow region, as in other areas, you need to know some nuances. For example, first of all, we look at the leaves of garlic, if they turn yellow on top, and to the bottom, to the bulb, have dried up, the garlic is almost ready for harvesting. But you still need to clarify, to do this, dig out a couple of heads of garlic and see in what condition the husk, whether it is dry, whether it is well peeled, whether the slices fall apart, whether their shell holds tightly. These are general conditions, we will analyze them more specifically. See also calendar of the gardener for 2015 for the Moscow region.
Winter garlic - when to clean?
In the Moscow region, usually winter garlic is ready for harvest in late June or early August. In June, arrows grow on it with seed bolls, which are usually removed so that the plant does not spend power on the seeds, but allows them to grow bulbs. But you can leave a couple of seeds on the seed, which will come in handy immediately in the spring with the onset of heat. It is also easy to determine by the arrows the readiness of the ripening of garlic - when the seed boxes begin to crack, the garlic is fully ripe for harvesting. But watch, in order to have time to remove the garlic before the time when the dug out bulbs of garlic begin to crack and separate. Such a product is no longer suitable for storage, it must be put into food in the first place.
After digging out the garlic, do not cut the leaves, put it in a shade for drying for a week, and then it will be possible to cut off everything that is not needed (leave the hemp from the leaves, remove the unnecessary husk to a clean head). Save the seed box until spring. For storage, leave medium-sized heads, and small and too large ones are best used as food.

Spring garlic - when to clean?
Spring garlic ripened around mid-August. Look at the leaves - when they already turn yellow above, but still remain green inside - it's time to clean. Again - dig out, gently uncoiling the ground, several heads, exfoliate, look at its condition, whether the heads are dense, whether the husk is dry, or the shell is cracking. If everything is fine, proceed to dig the rest of the garlic. After digging, line for drying in the shade, and after a week you can begin to prepare for storage. Remove all unnecessary, leave only the whole head with a small stump, cut the roots, but leave a couple of millimeters to the bottom. How well it dries - you can lower it into the basement. You can also, without trimming the roots, braid in braids and hang such a fragrant wreath in the kitchen for use, as our great-grandmothers stored it.
