In order to cook delicious canned tomatoes, you need to choose the right variety. Among the most popular varieties of this type is Pinocchio tomato, which forms beautiful cream fruits.

Grade description

This tomato was bred in the Crimea in the 90s in the Crimea, already in 1999 it was included in the State Register of Varieties of the Russian Federation. A variety of medium ripening dates, it is resistant to dry weather, as well as a number of diseases.

Fruits - elongated cylindrical shape, with a spout, very beautiful. The color of the fruit is bright red, up to 6-8 fruits are formed in the brush, which hang in clusters.

The variety was bred for cultivation in open ground, but in conditions of regions with a cold climate it is still preferable to grow it in shelters.

Main characteristics

The plant is compact and stocky, reaches a height of about 80 cm (in greenhouses). On ridges, the height usually does not exceed 60 cm. Leaves of medium size, dark green in color, leaf blades are strongly indented.

The first brush is laid over the 6th sheet, all subsequent ones go through the sheet.

Fruits are formed together, already on the 120th day you can remove the first tomatoes. The weight of tomatoes is not more than 90 grams, usually 70-80 grams. The fruit size and weight, as well as the presence of a dense skin, make this variety suitable for preservation in its entirety.

The pulp is tasty, juicy and very dense. Inside, usually no more than three chambers, few seeds. Fruits are first green, then, as they ripen, their skin acquires a beautiful red color. The similarity with the nose of the famous fairy-tale hero is given not only by the elongated shape of the fruit, but also by the presence of a sharp nose on the top of the tomato.

Fruits are used mainly for preservation: salting, pickles. Fresh Pinocchio tomatoes are also delicious, and they can also be used to decorate dishes.

Thanks to the dense skin in conservation, the tomatoes do not crack, they hold the shape well. Also, these fruits are well stored, suitable for long transportation.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Experienced gardeners know that on the site it is necessary to grow different varieties of tomatoes in order to provide the family with delicious fruits for the whole season. At the same time, the timing and purpose of the fruits are important. Varieties of lettuce are not suitable for preservation, while dense “fingers” or “cream” are not so tasty when fresh or sliced.

Therefore, the main advantage of Pinocchio is its versatility. Delicious fruits can be salted or canned, and they are also suitable for salads. The following qualities of this tomato also belong to advantages:

  • mid-season;
  • resistance to adverse weather conditions;
  • excellent taste (usually fresh cream is inferior to its large-fruited counterparts, but Pinocchio variety is good and so on);
  • resistance to disease, drought.

The tomato bears fruit abundantly in greenhouses, on ridges in the open air. Under the conditions of a hot summer, the fruits ripen perfectly on bushes even in regions such as the North-West and the Urals, although protection (non-woven materials) should also be provided in case of a sudden change in weather and cold snap.

In conservation (and this is noted by all gardeners), this variety is very tasty, and the fruits themselves in banks look beautiful. The good productivity of Pinocchio, up to 6 kg per square meter, is also one of the advantages. Given that usually no more than three bushes are grown on such an area, a tomato deserves attention not only from private owners, but also from farms.

The fruits are characterized by keeping quality, do not lose their attractive appearance during transportation. But there is a tomato Pinocchio and a few "minuses":

  • with improper care, the fruits (irregular irrigation, non-compliance with the temperature regime, violation of the illumination indicators) may have a deformed shape;
  • the need to form a bush.
ON A NOTE! Small Pinocchio fruits are suitable for drying and drying.

The variety is often grown commercially for sale.

Features agricultural technology tomato Pinocchio

The tomato is intended for cultivation on ridges of open ground, but grows well in greenhouses. For tomatoes, choose a sunny place, it is advisable to arrange plantings from east to west.

Apply the seedling method, growing tomatoes at home until the age of 55-60 days. When transplanting to ridges, the distance between plants is observed, planting on each square meter no more than three bushes of Pinocchio. Fertilize the soil in the fall, apply humus, phosphorus and potash fertilizers.

You can grow a low grade without supports, but during the fruiting period, so that the brushes do not break off the branches, you can tie them up.

When growing in a greenhouse or tunnels, mandatory ventilation of the shelters is carried out: in the heat, and also after each irrigation. In addition, the soil after irrigation is loosened.

Tomatoes are rarely watered, but it is ensured that each plant receives sufficient water. The first watering is done, 5-6 days after the seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place. Then, tomatoes are watered twice a week, given the weather conditions. Water should not fall on the plants themselves, so it is better to make grooves or holes in the ground, and pour water right there.

If it is not possible to regularly water the tomatoes, then it is recommended to use mulch. Hay, sawdust, mowed grass, humus will protect the soil from drying out, weeds, as well as retain the required amount of moisture.

Pinocchio is fed at least three times during the summer, and if necessary, 4-5 top dressings are carried out. First, fertilizers are applied approximately 14-18 days after transplantation, then every 10-14 days. For good tomato growth, fruit formation, phosphorus and potassium are needed, but you need to be careful with nitrogen additives. Nitrogen (mineral fertilizers or organics) is needed in the first half of the growing season, then phosphorus and potassium are preferred. Micronutrients are also fed using boric acid, as well as iodine.

Pinocchio is a variety that is little susceptible to disease. But this does not exclude the implementation of all preventive measures, because they say that the disease is better to prevent than to treat. These include:

  • obligatory disinfection of seeds before sowing;
  • compliance with crop rotation on the site;
  • mandatory ventilation of greenhouses;
  • proper watering;
  • compliance with fertilizer application standards.

They begin to harvest the fruits as they ripen, although many take off tomatoes in a blanched state (when they are brown). Thus, it is possible to increase the overall yield, and the taken fruits will reach perfectly at home.

Reviews about growing tomato Pinocchio

Inna, Vologda

In my village (I live there every summer) I grow several varieties of tomatoes directly on the ridges that I use for pickling. Among them is Pinocchio, who is very often haunted by my grandchildren. Usually, as soon as these beautiful tomatoes begin to ripen, they tear them right from the bush.

The variety is unpretentious, fruiting well in any year. I don’t buy seeds anymore, I always take my own and the results are good.

Nadezhda, Novopolotsk

Pinocchio appreciate the fact that you will always be with the harvest. Our weather can be capricious too, and brushes of this kind always form quickly. I only grow tomatoes in the beds, there is no room for greenhouses, but I am satisfied.I don’t grow large-fruited ones, but such small plum-shaped ones go with a bang. We make salads from them, and spin for the winter.
