grape variety Velez

Grapes "Veles" belongs to hybrids. Seedless varieties have always been highly regarded by consumers. In a short period of time, he gained popularity among the population. Although only a decade has passed since the cultivation of the variety, it has already managed to win the recognition of agronomists in many countries of the CIS and Europe.

Variety Characteristics

A hybrid was bred in the city of Zaporozhye by the famous breeder Zagorulko V.V. in 2009. And already in 2010, he became one of the winners in the international competition and was awarded two gold medals. Its parents are the well-known varieties Sofia and Rusball. The hybrid is named after the god of fertility Veles.

It belongs to the early ripening varieties, from the moment the buds open until the berries fully ripen, only 100-105 days pass, while in the parental varieties the ripening period is slightly longer. However, it is worth noting that in the southern regions grape matures earlier, and in the middle zone of the country later.

The bushes grow very quickly, under appropriate conditions, the shoots fully ripen. The length of the vine grows from 3 to 5 meters. The leaves are relatively large, five-lobed, painted in a deep green color. Inflorescences are large, bisexual flowers, do not require pollinator planting. But some agronomists plant grapes nearby to bloom with Veles to increase productivity. Veles can be cultivated in the southern and middle regions of Russia and Ukraine, as well as in Belarus, Moldova and the Volga region. The variety has good winter hardiness and is able to withstand frosts down to -20 degrees Celsius.

The clusters are conical, loose, about 25-30 centimeters long, weighing 600-900 grams. Subject to agrotechnical measures and proper care, one grape brush can reach 2.5-3 kg. The fruits are oval, elongated, one berry weighs approximately 5 grams. The skin is thin, covered with a pink waxy coating. The pulp is dense, juicy with a delicate aroma of nutmeg. There are no seeds in it, however, in the pulp there are rudiments (rudiments of the seeds), but when eaten they are not noticeable. Sugar content from 18 to 20%, acidity usually does not exceed 6-7 grams per liter. Bunches can hang on bushes for a long time, while berries do not crumble.

Interesting!
Seed rudiments are found in only 20% of berries.

Yields are directly dependent on care, on average 6.5 kg of grapes can be harvested from one bush. On stepsons, brushes are formed, in the southern regions you can collect the second wave of the crop from them. The variety tolerates transportation well and is subject to long-term storage. The Veles grape is universal, it can be eaten fresh, it is also suitable for making raisins and processing for juice or wine.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Veles is a high-yielding variety, it has a lot of positive qualities. But it is not without flaws.

Advantages:

  • early ripening;
  • attractive presentation;
  • the possibility of long-term storage and transportation;
  • excellent yield indicators;
  • universal application;
  • great taste of berries;
  • no need to plant pollinators.

Disadvantages:

  • poor resistance to fungal diseases;
  • inability to grow in the northern regions;
  • with high humidity berries are susceptible to cracking.

Disease prevention

Veles is not distinguished by strong immunity. Therefore, the condition of plants must be carefully monitored. Preventive spraying with Bordeaux liquid does not harm the grapes, they are carried out 3-4 times per season.Compliance with agrotechnical measures will help prevent the appearance of fungal diseases:

  • pruning;
  • garter to the support;
  • weed removal;
  • soil moisture regulation;
  • providing ventilation.

Landing and care

Landing is carried out in spring or autumn, in warm, calm weather. Grapes can be grown on any type of soil: loam, sandstone, chernozem and others. The landing site is chosen sunny, preferably on a hill, this will prevent moisture stagnation. The pit is prepared in advance, it should be at least 80 cm in depth and 70 cm in diameter. At the bottom, lay out drainage from broken brick, fine gravel or expanded clay, and the rest of the space is filled with earth mixed with sand and humus. Superphosphate and wood ash can be added to improve fertility. When planting several bushes between them, it is necessary to retreat a distance of 1.5 meters. Planting material must be healthy and have a well-developed root system.

Important!
Before planting grapes, it is imperative to install a support.

The first time after planting, you need to take care of the bush more carefully. It is advisable to put a layer of mulch, this will inhibit the growth of weed grass and retain moisture in the soil. Otherwise, the young plant needs to be provided with regular watering, loosen the soil and remove weeds in a timely manner.

An adult plant does not need frequent watering, it is carried out, if necessary, 3-5 times per season, depending on the weather and the amount of rainfall. When the berries ripen, watering is reduced, since excessive soil moisture can provoke cracking and decay of the fruit.

Harvest can be harvested already in the second year after planting, but experienced gardeners recommend removing inflorescences in the second year so that all the forces of the plant are directed to the growth and formation of the vine. Mandatory procedure is a garter to the support. This will contribute to better air circulation and reduce the likelihood of fungal diseases. Annual pruning is also necessary, in the fall closer to November, pruning of the vine is carried out for 6-8 eyes. The bushes grow very actively, when growing in the middle lane, stepsons are removed, since the brushes that have formed on them will simply not have time to ripen. In the southern regions stepsons pinch. For the winter, they organize shelter for grape.

Important!
Frosts are more destructive for young seedlings, so in the first few years you need to be very responsible in preparing for winter.

Adult plants do not tolerate the cold so hard, but still need shelter. After pruning, the vine is twisted and fixed to the ground, sprinkled with earth and covered with spruce top, agrofibre can also be used as a shelter.

Harvesting

Brushes do not always ripen at the same time, first ripen grape, which is more exposed to the sun, it is collected first. The clusters are cut with a clean tool, do it in dry weather. You need to try less to touch the berries with your hands so as not to erase the wax coating that protects the berries from spoilage. Loose clusters with whole berries are left for storage, without traces of disease and damage. Store it in a dry, well-ventilated and cool room. Subject to all conditions, grapes are stored until the new year.

Reviews

Maria Ivanovna

Veles is one of the youngest grape varieties in my garden. I have been growing for more than 30 years, so I have enough experience. Despite the fact that the variety belongs to medium-tolerant varieties, my bushes were not affected by diseases. The taste of berries is excellent, Veles produces excellent raisins, and we eat the rest of the crop fresh. I am satisfied with the variety, most importantly, my grandchildren like it because there are no seeds in it.

Two years ago this wonderful variety appeared on my summer cottage. The first crop was harvested already in the second year after planting, it was not enough, but I managed to taste the berries.In a couple of years I plan to plant several more bushes, I like that the grapes ripen early and do not crumble if you do not pick it in time.

Conclusion

"Veles" for a short period of its existence has already managed to fall in love with gardeners. Grapes have excellent taste, ripen much earlier than many varieties. When grown in the southern regions, it makes it possible to get a second crop. In leaving, he is unpretentious and tolerates cold well. If you follow the agricultural technology of the Veles variety, he will generously reward the owner with a large number of delicious berries.
