Apple tree “Glory to the winners”: characteristics and description

5.06.2018 Apple tree

“Glory to the Victors” is a time-tested variety. Gardeners appreciate it for its great taste and rich yield. Despite the fact that the variety was bred in 1928 in Ukraine, it does not lose its relevance. In 1954, the variety was distributed throughout the Soviet Union. It can still be found in many suburban areas of Russia, the Caucasus and Ukraine and Belarus.

The secret of the name of apples

Apples of this variety ripen quite late, when already the rest of the apple trees had time to yield. At this moment, Glory, in truth the winner, begins to bear fruit for other apple trees.

External features

The apple tree is characterized by a broad pyramidal crown and tallness. Over time, the shape of the crown changes, becomes round or oval. Light green rounded leaves have a yellowish tint. Brown branches of young trees grow up. The flowers of the apple tree are pink, and the buds are bright red. Smooth fruits come in both medium and large sizes. The maximum weight of an individual fruit is 180 g. Ripe fruits have a light green color with red spots. The light flesh of apples is juicy in taste, sweet and sour. The apple tree looks especially impressive during the spring flowering period. The delicate aroma of flowers fills the orchard.

Interesting fact! Apple seeds exist separately from the seed box. If you shake the fetus, you can hear a characteristic rustle.

Positive characteristics

"Glory" is resistant to disease, easily tolerates harsh winters, so cultivation can occur without problems both in the southern and northern regions. The variety has a high yield. A 14-year-old apple tree can bring up to 70 kg of apples per season. Breeders rank “Glory” as a reliable variety. The fruits are strong, so they can be safely transported over long distances. Apples also attract gardeners due to their mouth-watering appearance. An important role is played by a favorable ripening time. This is the same period when the remaining apple trees no longer bear fruit. Therefore, it is possible to enjoy sweet fruits all fall.

The negative side of the variety

The apple tree negatively tolerates drought, so it does not grow in the southern regions. But if you actively engage in watering, then the situation can be corrected. The crown of the tree quickly and strongly thickens, which requires constant trimming of extra branches. Ripe fruits cannot hang on the apple tree for a long time and often fall off, which may affect their integrity and storage period. Variety Slava Pobediteli apples are stored for a short time: in the cellar for up to 1.5 months, and in the refrigerator for a maximum of 4 months. The apple tree itself is barren, so it needs a pollinator.

It's important to know! Near the apple tree, it is recommended to plant "Antonovka", "Priam" or "Melbu". This will be the process of pollination.

Rules for planting an apple tree

To get a rich harvest, you must follow the basic rules when planting trees, choose the right place and take care of the composition of the soil. The apple tree bears fruit better in the illuminated areas, so do not try to fill the shady sides with it. The color of the fruit depends on the amount of light. Apple trees growing in the shade give fruit with a slight pinkish blush. And apples, fully exposed to the sun, are always bright red. In addition, the shadow affects the sweetness of the fruit and the amount of the crop, naturally reducing it.Especially wet places should be avoided, as the apple tree does not tolerate excessive water. The bottom of the pit can be laid out by drainage, which absorbs moisture. The soil must have neutral acidity. Mostly it is loamy or sandy loamy soils. Seedlings usually root in spring or autumn. They also have certain requirements: the root system must be developed, the bark without damage. The seedling should be at least 1.5 m and always with branches. If planting is done in the fall, then all leaves on the branches are removed. For a week, a hole is prepared for sowing. They dig a hole 1 m deep and 70 cm wide. It all depends on the development of the root system. Fertile soil mixed with ash and humus is poured at the bottom of the pit. A seedling is placed in the center, being careful not to damage the roots. Fall asleep with soil. If the plant has previously been planted in a container, then do not shake it off the ground, plant along with the contents of the container. So the apple tree will take root better. The earth is tamped a little and watered (it will take about 1 bucket of water). A peg is driven in to support the plant. At the request of the gardener, the soil is mulched with straw, sawdust. If you have more than one tree, then the distance between the seedlings is 4 m.

Proper care

Mandatory care will be required for seedlings under the age of 3 years. It involves watering, loosening, removing weeds and top dressing. In the first year of planting, an apple tree needs 30-40 liters of water. In hot weather, the amount of moisture is increased. Watering is required during periods such as ovary formation, flowering, and a few days before fruit formation. In August, the procedure is completed to allow the apple tree to settle in front of the winter cold. In order to get juicy fruits, it is necessary to make top dressing.

On a note! The fruits ripen, depending on the territory, either in early August or early September.

In the first year after planting, nitrogen fertilizers are applied (early May). As organic top dressing, manure and compost are used. After flowering, the apple tree is abundantly sprayed. Periodically recommend loosening the earth near the trunk, especially after watering. Young apple trees need to be shaped. Thanks to a suitable crown, the apple tree will bear fruit abundantly and will endure winter frosts. Not only young trees are pruned, but also old ones. In the second year of the tree's life, the first pruning is carried out. Carefully monitor the process so as not to remove the fruiting branches. The vertical shoot is removed immediately. It will only slow down the growth of the plant.

Variety propagation

Gardeners know four ways to get new individuals. Let's consider each of them.

Seeds

As a rule, the most painstaking way of breeding apple trees. Only breeders are involved in this method, and often it does not produce tangible results.

Layering

For that breeding method, you will need a young tree planted at an angle. With the onset of spring, overgrown branches, those that will touch the soil, attach to the ground or instill right there. After a year, overgrown shoots are cut off and planted on a site in a permanent place.

Cuttings

This is an easier way. Cuttings are cut approximately 20 cm, all plant elements are removed from below, and foliage is cleaned. Strongly sprinkle with earth is not necessary. Perhaps 2-3 cm will be enough. Cuttings are periodically watered. Over the summer period, they should turn out real seedlings, which are subsequently transplanted to a permanent place.

Eyes

On the bark of the plant, an incision is made in the form of the letter T. The bark is separated in different directions. A part of an adult tree is placed in the hole, on which there is a kidney and a small petiole. The bark that we bent back to its original position and press hard. For reliability, the bark is attached to a tree. The kidneys remain not closed. The procedure is done on a clear, calm day. After 14 days, the incision is opened and they look what happened. The experiment was successful if the peephole is green.

Possible pests and diseases

It is possible that the apple can suffer from diseases such as scab, fruit rot, powdery mildew and cytosporosis. Powdery mildew can be determined by the white coating of leaves, which gradually turns into brown. To get rid of the disease, garden trees are sprayed with a solution of copper sulfate, copper chloride. But processing begins either before flowering begins, or after harvesting. The bark of an apple tree is susceptible to cytosporosis. It imperceptibly dries and falls off. In the fight against misfortune, the Hom remedy will help. Fruit rot is easy to recognize by the dark brown spots that cover the fruit. Scab is characterized by curl of leaves and their fall. The fruits also suffer, covered with black spots. Use Topaz to eliminate scab.

Of the pests, the most common are leaf flap, red tick and apple moth. For their extermination use Octamethyl, Zolon. Read the instructions carefully and follow the algorithm. When disinfection take care of the equipment and protection of the respiratory system, skin.

Reviews from experienced gardeners

Irina, 34 years old, Novozybkov

The variety brought us a stable rich harvest. The apple tree wintered well, which, in principle, I did not really count on. The branches of Glory grow quickly, so we often cut them. Summer turned out to be hot, the apple tree began to dry. I had to water abundantly, and the plant perked up. Apples were used for mashed potatoes and compotes for the winter.

Boris, 57 years old, Kameshkovo

We have had an apple orchard for several decades; tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Glory to the Winners we have 5 pieces. Always plant next to it varieties that can pollinate it. Apples are tasty, although they are stored relatively briefly. In order to prevent infection of all trees, I spend regular spraying in early spring.

Vladislav, 54, the city of Maloyaroslavets

She gained fame on the advice of a friend in the nursery. Grandchildren love juice, so I decided to treat them to a natural drink without chemistry. What beauty reigns on the site when the apple trees begin to bloom. Our fruits ripen by the end of August. The variety fell in love with its smooth skin, velvety flesh and juiciness. I advise everyone to at least once try apples of the Glory to the Victors variety.
