24.02.2018 Tomatoes

Not a single vegetable grower can do without planting tomatoes at his site. Firstly, this is one of the popular and well-established vegetable crops in our latitudes. And secondly, tomatoes have excellent taste, they are rich in healthy vitamins and minerals, as well as universal in use.

It is these qualities that the Agate tomato variety possesses, which has been tested by time, because the variety was bred 30 years ago.

Grade characteristics

It is an early ripening variety, in which the ripening period after the first seed germination is 95-110 days.

The variety is grown both in seedling and seed method. The first method is considered more productive, since you can get a big crop.

To obtain seedlings, the seeds are sown in mid-March, and transferred to the open ground at the end of June. The distance between the seedlings should be maintained more than 40 cm.

Important! The seedlingless method of sowing is used only in the southern regions or greenhouses. 2-3 seeds are planted in one well, then the excess is removed.

Characteristic of the fetus:

  • the weight of one tomato varies from 60 to 100 g;
  • tomatoes are perfectly even, almost the same size;
  • have the shape of a flattened circle;
  • the skin is durable and glossy;
  • tomatoes do not crack, and therefore they are suitable for long-term transportation;
  • ripe fruits have a deep red color.

Early tomatoes are often consumed fresh, but they are also ideal for canning due to their size and shape.

A distinctive feature of an agate tomato bush is that:

  • the bush is compact and stunted, which does not require shaping and pinching;
  • height rarely reaches half a meter;
  • five brushes are formed on the plant, on each of which 3-4 fruits ripen;
  • the tomato is fleshy and not watery.

Advantages and disadvantages

Agate variety has the following positive qualities:

  1. It is a non-hybrid variety, so you can easily collect seeds from ripe fruits and use them for the next year.
  2. The fruits ripen in time all at once.
  3. It has a very high yield for such a small bush - 4-5 kg.

One main and only drawback of this variety is its tendency to late blight disease (it belongs to the group of common nightshade diseases). To avoid this, 14 days after the planting of seedlings in the soil, it is recommended to treat the plant bushes with Bordeaux liquid, which is absolutely safe for humans.

Agricultural Engineering Rules

The key to strong seedlings is quality seeds. The variety does not require much effort for cultivation and care, but, nevertheless, it is worth knowing a few points:

  • seeds should be immersed in water with salt for 10-15 minutes, all empty ones will float to the surface, they are unsuitable for germination;
  • be sure to treat the seeds in a solution with potassium permanganate in order to disinfect them;
  • plant the seeds to a depth of not more than 2 cm, and cover with plastic wrap;
  • seedlings will appear already on the 7th day, then they need to provide light and heat;
  • a necessary condition for the successful growth of seedlings in the open ground is the hardening of seedlings: periodically take them outside for a week and leave them in a calm place;
  • favorable predecessors of tomato are last year's beds with legumes, herbs and carrots;
  • it is desirable to water the beds with warm water;
  • for the entire growing season, it is enough to apply complex fertilizer 3 times.

Reviews

Users of the online space cultivating Agatha cultivar mark it as a cultivar proven over the years, resistant to weather conditions and quite unpretentious in cultivation and care, subject to certain rules of agricultural technology.

In addition, they notice that even a novice grower can grow this variety without planting experience, since Agate is noted for its ease of care. Consumers indicate that the plant will bear fruit until late autumn frosts.

Most gardeners still recommend a bush tied up. This is due to the fact that it does not withstand a large number of fruits and bends to the ground, which is why tomatoes rot. The fruits have a sour, not very sweet, but rich taste.

Thus, the variety is recommended for planting in suburban areas.
