Grade description
Boronia - a determinant, standard tomato ripening medium. The bushes are stocky, strong and steady, compact about 70 cm. The leaves are wide of potato type, dark green, slightly wrinkled. Sometimes there are reviews where the hybrid is described a little differently. For example, when growing this tomato under agrofiber, a bush can rise up to 100 or even 120 cm.
The originator recommends cultivating a hybrid in open ground. Numerous reviews of gardeners show that Boronia tomato gives excellent results in greenhouses. It can be grown in the middle lane and in the south. The hybrid is highly resistant to adverse weather factors and most diseases.
Characteristic Tomato
The fruits are oval, flattened or flat-round, sometimes slightly ribbed, but more often uniform (from 200 to 300 grams). The taste is excellent, refreshing, sweet with barely noticeable acid. The aroma is strong fruit and tomato. There can be many seed chambers, but they are small, grains are in a green shell.
The color of the fruit is burgundy, dark pink or brownish purple. The pulp is pink in color without veins. The skin is dense, thin and smooth, does not crack. A dry speck forms on the tip of the tomato, but it does not affect the quality of the tomato in any way. It often happens that the fruits first become soft and only then begin to change color.
Use and yield
On one brush 5–6 large tomatoes are formed. The first inflorescence grows after 6 or 7 leaves, subsequent brushes grow every 2 leaves. On average, with proper agricultural technology, up to 8 kilograms of tomatoes can be harvested from one square meter. In cold summers, the rate may drop slightly.
Boronia is suitable for fresh consumption, and it is also used in cooking, frozen, salted and canned. This tomato can be closed for the winter only as a dressing for other vegetables, slices and in salads. The juice is saturated and thick.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
If you find the original, high-quality seeds of this hybrid, you just have to enjoy growing it. Let's move on to the positive characteristics:
- high taste and marketability tomato, unusual color;
- excellent immunity to short-term temperature changes and diseases;
- the possibility of growing in open and closed ground;
- ripe fruits do not crack, are well stored for up to 10-12 days, easily tolerate transportation;
- unripe tomatoes can be left for ripening;
- high productivity even in adverse years.
The hybrid has few drawbacks, the most significant is the susceptibility to late blight. However, the disease can only catch the weakest bushes. Large fruits cannot be closed entirely. Another drawback - Boronia tomato is of great interest to the Colorado potato beetle and caterpillars.
You can also note the lack of the possibility of self-harvesting seed. Although some gardeners sometimes manage to grow a tomato with all the initial characteristics from the collected seeds.
Cultivation and care
Sowing seedlings is carried out 60 and 65 days before the intended planting in a permanent place. Dive seedlings at the stage of formation of 2 true leaves. On one square meter no more than 5 seedlings are placed.
To get a good crop of large and beautiful tomatoes, experienced gardeners advise partial removal of stepsons. Hybrid Boronia recommended to grow in 3, 4 or 5 stems, cut off the rest. Leaves in the lower part are gradually removed, the crown can be thinned out.
Strong and stable supports should be taken care of before landing. The bush grows very rapidly, the fruits quickly gain weight, the garter should be done on time. The beds are mulched with hay or freshly cut grass, the soil is periodically loosened and the weeds are constantly monitored.
Watering, top dressing and preventive spraying are carried out in a standard mode for tomatoes. As a fertilizer, you can use various mineral complexes and organics.
Disease and Pest Prevention
We are already familiar with all possible risks. We will deal with methods to prevent the appearance of ailments.
Phytophthora
The disease begins to walk along the tomato beds from the middle of summer, with a sharp cooling and an increase in humidity. If the temperature suddenly drops and it rains for more than 2 days, it's time to act. So that the fungus bypasses the Boronia tomato, the bushes are treated with special chemical and biological preparations.
But the best option would be to follow the rules of agricultural technology: sowing green manure, alternating crops, controlling moisture and soil structure, harvesting weeds, cutting the lower leaves, disinfecting planting material, garden tools and land.
In open and protected soil, plants are sprayed with a mixture of copper sulfate and washing powder (tablespoon per 10 liters of water). Another option is half a liter of yogurt (without lumps) or kefir, 2 liters of water and 5 drops of iodine.
Caterpillars
Scoop does not like the aroma of tansy, wormwood, marigold and calendula. The best way to prevent the emergence of a caterpillar devouring fruit is to plant these plants in the aisles. In critical cases, resort to spraying with insecticides.
Colorado beetle
There is one very tricky way to deal with this insidious pest. The option is not associated with the destruction of the colorado, it is based on the distraction of the insect. The bug really likes fragrant tobacco, much more than tomatoes and even potatoes. Behind the garden should plant as many bushes of this plant as possible, and it is better to grow it through seedlings twice a season.
If we talk about the use of special drugs, then such a recipe will be quite effective - 2 ml of Prestige and 3 ml of Previkur Energy for 10 liters of water. The solution is used immediately when planting tomatoes, 200 ml of the mixture are poured into each well. The following treatment is carried out after 2 weeks. The recipe is the same, 20 ml of liquid organic fertilizer can be added to it.
In any case, sometimes you need to inspect tomato leaves for the presence of Colorado potato beetle eggs, they are collected manually and destroyed.
Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, the hybrid rarely suffers from any ailments. Anyone who has not tried to grow this tomato on their site should buy it. Tomato Boroniya deserves everyone's attention!
Reviews
Irina. I've been growing Boronia for 3 years, a wonderful variety, very tasty and fruitful. In the first year, some fruits cracked at the base, I really thought of abandoning it. But the next season I accidentally ordered again and did not regret it; more of these incidents did not happen. Beautiful, sweet, unusual colors tomatoes like children and adults, and the juices obtained are simply amazing.
Catherine. I recommend this hybrid to everyone, I grew it in the Krasnodar Territory and in the Leningrad Region, in open and closed ground. Everywhere Boronia gives good crops and does not get sick. I have a small garden, I have to plant nearby the culture of one family. For the prevention of pests, planting of different plants with a strong aroma is enough for me. The variety looks interesting in various winter salads, it goes well in fresh slices.
