Tomato Calvados: characteristics and description of the variety (photo)

23.02.2018 Tomatoes

Tomato Calvados is the result of the work of Ukrainian breeders. Its characteristics and description of the variety are interesting only to true gardening enthusiasts, those who prefer to grow new and unusual varieties, such that none of the neighbors have it. The bush of this variety is indeterminate. Productivity, according to various reviews, is average, then high. A few photos show maroon fruits, of a standard form, without green shoulders, weighing from 120 to 300 g.

The mid-ripening variety, which, under standard agricultural techniques, can reach growth of 1.2–1.6 m, requires an indispensable garter, scrupulous observance of all agronomic features. In the middle lane can be grown mainly in the greenhouse. The variety gives the best growth indicators when forming a bush of 2 stems and requires mandatory and permanent pinching, organic fertilizers, a garter to the support, like any tomato bush that reaches similar growth indicators.

Tomato Calvados gives brown-red and juicy fruits suitable for culinary needs and juices. It has a thin skin and a large percentage of liquid content, which makes it an excellent raw material for squeezing juices according to any recipe. With proper agricultural technology, several inflorescences grow on the bushes, each of which gives 2–4 tomatoes.

In this case, the discrepancies in the characteristics and description of the variety disappear as soon as it comes to the suitability for processing. All unequivocally agree that this is an ideal option for seaming homemade juices, including when it comes to various dressings, sauces and flavorings for winter cooking.

Photos sent to lovers of varieties with good performance, demonstrate maroon strong fruits that fit well in the palm of the owner.

Breeding and development history of the variety

In Europe, for the third decade in a row, tomatoes of unconventional shades have been grown, because it has been noticed that in multicolored fruits there is a certain excess of nutrients. Green and olive varieties help get rid of allergies and prevent allergic reactions to plant products.

Violet and black varieties, to which Calvados is conditionally related, contain natural antioxidants - blue and black anthocyanins.

Tomatoes Calvados relate to black-ripened tomatoes conditionally, because normally they are red-brown in color, only slightly different from the usual standard color of ordinary red varieties. However, subject to proper agricultural technology, their skin acquires a more pronounced shade, as well as the pulp in the section.

Important! Studies have shown that varieties with similar color characteristics have a beneficial effect on the state of the cardiovascular system and have the ability to prevent the formation and development of cancer cells. They improve visual function, even with the onset of age-related changes.

It is these properties of black tomatoes that attracted the attention of European scientists, followed by ordinary consumers, and not the love of exotic and unusual colors of tomato peels.

Calvados, bred by Ukrainian breeders, is an intermediate variety between purple, black and red tomatoes, which contains useful substances necessary for many diseases.The insufficient prevalence of varietal material of this variety, which appeared back in 2014, led to the fact that the Calvados variety was grown mainly in the Krasnodar Territory in open ground. And only in 2016 were the first attempts to breed it in greenhouse conditions made.

The feedback from gardeners, who shared their experience on the forums, suggests that, with proper agricultural technology, the variety shows high yields. Many note the wateriness of the fruit, which, nevertheless, has a good and pronounced taste. But there is an undoubted positive moment in this, because many have been growing Calvados for sewing home-made juices for two years in a row. They have a rich taste and a rich content of vitamins.

Note! There are not very many gardeners engaged in the cultivation of black and blue varieties in the country, so the exact instructions for them have not yet been developed. There are opinions that such varieties are unpretentious and do not require special care. But those who are closely faced with the cultivation of exotic varieties, insist that they, on the contrary, require careful treatment and care, and a specific selection of bait.

Dark-fruited varieties: the pros and cons

In Europe, such varieties are grown purposefully and are used mainly in dietary nutrition. Therefore, they try not to apply any mineral fertilizers, replacing them with organic ones. They are used in small and strictly limited quantities.

The undoubted advantages of the Calvados variety include the following, which are not known to a wide circle of lovers of exotic quality varieties:

You may be interested in:
  1. This is an indeterminate bush, which can be limited in growth if necessary.
  2. It has an unusual color and taste of fruits with a thin skin and a high water content. This makes the crop in demand for rolling home juices and creating a home vitamin base for the winter.
  3. There is an increased ability of fruits to act as components of dietary nutrition for cardiovascular pathologies (due to the content of useful substances in them). They are recommended for possible risks of cancer of an ecological or hereditary nature, to improve vision.
  4. High productivity with greenhouse cultivation and the preservation of all useful properties.
  5. Like any dark-fruited tomato with a high content of nutrients, Calvados acts as a natural aphrodisiac. It is able to influence the state of potency in men, being a natural stimulant of sexual desire.
Fact! Aronia tomatoes naturally have a high content of carotenoids, anthocyanins and natural antioxidants. This their property can be enhanced by observing certain growing conditions as a result of which they acquire a more pronounced dark color.

It has been established that such a color is obtained in the fruits of black-fruited tomatoes due to the significant concentration of anthocyanins acquired by them with proper agricultural technology.

However, due to the specific features of dark-skinned varieties and insufficient experience in their cultivation, domestic vegetable growers have not developed enough general and effective agricultural technology. This creates certain difficulties for people without sufficient experience working with problem cultures.

Advice! Starting to grow exotic varieties of tomatoes, you should take care of the reliability and solid reputation of the supplier from whom the seed material is purchased. Experienced gardeners noted that, instead of the expected novelty - Aronia Calvados, you can purchase seeds of another variety, also aronia, but more common.

Features of agricultural technology and precautions

Before planting quite expensive seed material, you should familiarize yourself with the long-term weather forecast and the lunar calendar, choosing the optimal time for planting seedlings in open ground. Planting seeds for seedlings is carried out 60-65 days before the intended planting. Seeds are planted in fairly warm air (at least 20 degrees), in good light and with a mandatory decrease in temperature at night by 2-3 degrees. Humidity in the greenhouse should reach 60–70%.

Seedlings can be baited only with the help of organic fertilizers or with a special composition for exotic varieties. In the middle lane and in temperate climates, the Calvados variety is suitable only for greenhouse cultivation.

For reference! Experienced vegetable growers note that stepsoning should be carried out regularly, and seedlings and bushes should be treated at least regularly from possible diseases and pests. When growing exotic varieties, it is not recommended to use either chemical fertilizers or non-synthetic pesticides. They not only can damage the plant, but also reduce the possibility of targeted use for various diseases.

Such bushes need weekly treatment with trichodermin. This is a special biological product designed to treat plants from fungus. However, some gardeners try to avoid even such treatment and use their own, developed or inherited folk remedies for this.

To protect against fungal diseases, they often use:

  • garlic infusion;
  • naturally acidified serum;
  • sour kvass;
  • stale diluted kefir.

Such treatment is recommended not only in open ground, but also when planting in greenhouses, because the intensive growth of such varieties, the constant formation of new brushes and the harvest of fruits with thin skin that are not taken off time, lead to the rapid development of mold or fungus.

Interesting! By the intensity of the prevalence of dark tones in the fruits, one can judge the level of soil acidity. As soon as the acidity level exceeds the norm, the fruits acquire a pink-raspberry color, and the normalization of the level leads to their instant darkening. This is the reaction of anthocyanins, which were previously contained only in the stems of the plant, and as a result of the selection selection began to be present in the fruits.

Calvados variety needs careful gartering and removal of layering in the maximum volume in order to strengthen the main stems as much as possible. Such a precaution is necessary because the fruit has a thin skin. As soon as they are adjacent to the ground, immediate damage to the tomato occurs and decay begins. For the same reason, it is necessary to carefully monitor the ripening of tomatoes and collect them from the bush in a state of technical ripeness. This is especially true when the variety is grown as a commercial product.

It is recommended to fertilize the bushes with a small amount of bird droppings right before planting seedlings (no more than a matchbox) of ash or chalk in a powder state.

In general, the reviews about the taste qualities of the Calvados variety are positive. In greenhouse conditions, it can be attributed to mid-ripening varieties with a ripening period of 115-120 days. Bushes can grow up to 160 cm in height, however, with such growth indicators, there is a decrease in productivity, which some growers call high, and some respond as medium and even low.

However, many intend to continue to grow, due to the beneficial components that make up the fruit, they are used in adult dietary and therapeutic baby food, and are able to have a positive effect on many aspects of health.
