If the gardener has problems with the amount of space intended for planting seedlings, then a great way was found. Seeds are sown in paper rolls. This option is called self-roll or seedlings in Moscow. Suitable for most crops: peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, cabbage, eggplant. Flower seeds also lend themselves to germination using the roll technique.

The essence and features of the method
The principle of the sequence of operations is the same for all plants. Initially, paper and cellophane blanks are prepared. Will fit plain toilet paper. A polyethylene film is cut across the width of the paper. The film thickness should be such that the package could stand on its own in the glass.
Technics:
- Layout is easier to perform on paper sizes. The length of the segments is different, ranging from 30 to 50 cm. If there are a lot of seeds, then it is better to cut it shorter.
- A paper layer is laid on the surface of the table. It should be wetted with a spray or gently dripping in the center.
- Next, for each seed contribute 2-3 cm from the top edge. Density is determined by the type of plant, on average it is four cm. It is not recommended to be laid very close - there will be no room for growth.
- A film is placed on top of the seeds, the edges should match. Then carefully fold. By the way, the thinner the paper, and the more moistened it is, it is more likely that it will tear.
Several of these rolls are installed in a glass or other container with a height of 7-10 cm. Water is poured onto a third of the height of the glass. To create a greenhouse effect, a glass is placed in a plastic bag or covered with it. Do not completely block the access of oxygen, there must be a hole for ventilation.
After the appearance of green shoots, mineral fertilizer is added to the water. The concentration of such irrigation is calculated from the amount of water in the glass, i.e. make him very weak.
During growth, every few days you need to check the water level. After a month, when the leaves appear, fertilizing should be repeated.
After the germination time expands, roll the roll with a polyethylene base to itself, as it was originally laid. The paper has already become wet, care must be taken not to break off the sprouts. Each sprout is cut individually with paper. If the steps are completed accurately, the sprouted seeds can be curled up and put back in a container of water. Ready sprouts are planted in the garden in the ground or in individual pots for further growth.
Advantages and disadvantages
- without the use of land in seedlings, and the consequence is the lack of the possibility of a black leg disease;
- space saving;
- simplicity of the technique.
Minimum requirements allow you to sow directly on the windowsill. Folded rolls are very convenient to store in cups, several rolls in one.
For more heat-loving plants, this technique is suitable in the early stages of seedling development. Slow growth requires germination directly in the ground.Gardeners have to plant seedlings in pots after a short time and continue to care as usual. It is inconvenient, takes up more space, troublesome.
When is it suitable
When germinating in a folded position, the stems of the seedlings are stretched. This is not always a positive effect when gardeners get it. Heat-loving peppers develop worse; a thin root system is obtained.
Depending on the crop varieties, for example, for tomatoes, squat, strong root bases with a branched trunk structure are needed. To obtain bush tomatoes, stretching to the sun will not allow to achieve large fruits. This is due to the close arrangement of seeds to each other, due to which the development occurs upward, and minimally in width. This saves space. Mostly when sowing cold-resistant vegetables and flowers there are no problems.
Advice and opinion of those who planted
Long-term testers of the roll method already have some skill and know their secrets. For example, for a higher seed yield, they are first sorted in a salt solution. Floated seeds are discarded and the remaining ones are planted. It is better to use paper three-layered, if stacked in one layer. It is better to cover with another layer in front of the film. So the seeds will hold on tight, and the roots will have a place to grow.
The liquid level at the bottom does not matter. Water can be no more than 1 cm. The main thing is that it be saturated with nutrients. You can’t feed right away. Due to the paper fiber, roots are formed primarily. Without an excess of minerals, they will grow stronger and give full growth to the entire plant. Once the roots are ready, then all the forces go to the stem.
Understanding the result, knowledge of the variety of crops will make the right choice for using the roll method.
