Description and characteristics of cucumber varieties Parisian Gherkin: planting and care

13.08.2019 Cucumbers

Cucumbers of small size and neat shape are called gherkins. Their length rarely exceeds 11 centimeters; they are good for salting, appetizers, salads. Among similar varieties, the Parisian gherkin is especially different: it is tastier than analogs and gives a large harvest.

Grade characteristics

The Parisian Gherkin is included in the Russian State Register. This mid-early bee pollinated variety is recommended to be grown in the central part of the country, but with proper care it can withstand a more severe climate. It is suitable both for open ground and for a greenhouse. The peculiarity of the variety is resistance to diseases: cladosporiosis, mosaic virus.

Fruits ripen quickly: 40-45 days after the seeds were planted in the ground. Harvest pleases with its abundance, the number of cucumbers reaches 4 kg per square planting. The taste is also on top: fruits without bitterness, juicy, crunchy. Each cucumber weighs 65-90 grams, reaches 8-11 centimeters in length. The shape is very neat, resembling an oval cylinder. The bush plant is resistant to heat, so you can grow it even in the midst of summer. Harvest tolerates transportation, maintaining its original appearance.

The advantages of this variety include:

  • relatively quick ripening of the crop;
  • resistance to certain diseases of cucumbers;
  • good taste characteristics;
  • convenient form, which is suitable for salads and for canning;
  • long harvest, in the greenhouse can bear fruit until October;
  • unpretentiousness to the environment: you can grow in a greenhouse, and in open land, and even at home;
  • plentiful harvest, up to 400 centners per hectare.
Important!
If you grow cucumbers in a greenhouse, apply artificial pollination, otherwise the crop will turn out not so plentiful.

The disadvantage is the fact that cucumbers can outgrow their normal size if collected at the wrong time. So for those who visit the cottage only once a week, this variety may not be suitable. For a good harvest, regular watering and a special support for the bushes are necessary so that they are comfortable growing.

Cucumber Care

To prevent pests, it is necessary to carefully care for crops. Loosen the soil, regularly water, timely remove weeds, pinch shoots, add fertilizers in time and monitor the condition of the leaves. There are several rules that will achieve the maximum quality of the fruit.

  1. You need to water the Parisian gherkin after lunch. When foliage is just formed, water should be in moderation, after the appearance of flowers, the number of waterings should be reduced, and as soon as the fruits appear, increase again.
  2. For watering, you need to use warm water, otherwise you can reduce the immunity of plants and increase the risk of diseases.
  3. Add fertilizer as food. Before the appearance of the fruit - once every ten days, twice. As a top dressing, you can use superphosphate fertilizers.
  4. Tie cucumber lashes on the trellis, this will allow them not to touch the soil and receive more light and air.
Important!
Too tight cucumbers can increase the risk of disease. For example, powdery mildew. One of the ways of propagating this fungus is to migrate from the leaves of one plant to another.

The Parisian gherkin belongs to spreading bushy plants, it has a developed green part, especially the side lashes. Try to plant cucumbers not too tight to avoid touching and overlapping areas. The optimal planting frequency: four bushes per square in the open air and three in the greenhouse. Also, the lashes can be tied up for a more rational distribution of space. In general, the variety is quite unpretentious and easily tolerates all climate changes and temperature changes.

Cultivation methods

This variety can be grown in a greenhouse, on open ground or even at home, on the balcony. For fruitful plantings, the first two options are suitable. You can immediately send seeds to the garden or prepare pre-seedlings. The second method is suitable to get an early harvest.

Direct Landing

You can get good results with this approach if you follow the basic rules of sowing technology. All seeds must be sanitized before planting. This will get rid of diseases and pests that are stored in raw materials. Additionally, you can treat with stimulants that accelerate growth and harden crops. Future bushes should be planted to a depth of about three centimeters, not more than 3-4 per square.

Planting Dates:

You may be interested in:
  • polycarbonate greenhouses - the first week of May;
  • under the film - the third week of May;
  • in open ground without additional shelter - the last week of May.

The exact timing will depend on the region and the climate. Remember that sharp temperature fluctuations harm cucumbers. Despite the fact that the Parisian gherkin is a fairly stable variety, climate change can impair immunity, leading to disease. Even in the same region, sowing dates may vary due to weather conditions. Try not to plant cucumbers if there is a rainy or drought season.

Planting seedlings

More often, cucumbers of this variety are planted using preliminary seedling preparation. This allows you to get the crop much earlier, protecting crops from temperature fluctuations and changing weather conditions. Here, too, there are several rules that allow you to get a high-quality and plentiful crop.

  1. Use high-quality raw materials: large seeds are best suited for seedlings.
  2. Sanitize, harden, and process the seeds before planting them in separate germination containers.
  3. Choose containers: it should be dishes or pots measuring 8 or 10 centimeters, always with holes for drainage.
  4. Do not fill the containers completely: just lay the nutrient soil 3/4 in them. The earth should be quite loose, saturated and light.
  5. Moisten the ground before planting.
  6. Plant the seeds to a shallow depth of 2-3 centimeters.

Germinate seeds in an environment with good humidity and a temperature of about 27 ° C. The place should be well lit. Growing seedlings of cucumbers should be placed in a lighted place. As soon as the seeds give the first shoots, and the first couple of leaves appear on the sprouts, cucumbers can be transplanted under the open sky or in the greenhouse.

Reviews

I grow these cucumbers every summer. I especially like pickling them: crispy fruits are great for canning.When pests appear, I treat them with chemicals, and if the plant has already begun to bear fruit, then I prefer folk remedies. Ammonia helps well.

The main thing in this grade is to correctly and timely tie up! Otherwise, bushy lashes will occupy the entire garden and will not give growth to neighboring cucumbers. I usually fasten on sticks stuck in the ground next to the bushes. I prefer to immediately grow in open ground: the Parisian gherkin ripens early enough, I see no reason to plant seedlings.

I begin to grow these cucumbers in advance, using seedlings. So it turns out to harvest the first crop much earlier than the rest. I grow the Parisian gherkin for sale: it gives an excellent harvest, and these little cucumbers taste very good. I especially like the lack of bitterness in the fruits.

This variety of cucumbers is quite unpretentious. After proper seed preparation and soil cultivation, it remains only to water in a timely manner, remove weeds and tie up the lashes. A nice bonus: the resistance of the variety to certain diseases and heat. The Parisian gherkin gives a good harvest, up to four kilograms per square, and bears fruit for a long time. The main thing is to observe crop rotation and monitor the condition of plants in order to feed or treat on time.
