Autumn leaf fall: why the strawberry bush did not drop leaves

26.08.2019 Strawberry

Despite the fact that strawberries (strawberries) grow in almost every area, many know almost nothing about this crop. Most plants with leaves dump them for the winter, but this does not happen here. The reasons are related to growth patterns.

Why is strawberry evergreen

Of course, strawberries are wilted and old leaves disappear. Part of the foliage turns yellow, gradually dries, falls off. At the same time, young leaves in the fall do not even change their color.

On a note!
If you open a bush from under the snow in early spring, then there will be beautiful bright green foliage from below. It will look exactly like in the summer.

There is no exact answer to the question why the leaves are not dropped for the winter in the fall. There is a hypothesis that once upon a time strawberries were an evergreen bush, fruiting year round.

But after the Ice Age, culture needed to adapt to new conditions, like other plants. True, strawberries did not learn to dump leaves on their own.

It is difficult to discover the common features of a strawberry bush and palm tree, but it is worth a closer look:

  • in both cases, the stems are covered with remains of petioles;
  • there is a stem (it is called a horn), but it is very short.

In fact, strawberries are miniature palm trees.

Another interesting fact. Many erroneously strawberry fruits are called berries, which are false, since the fruit is not a tasty pulp - but numerous seeds from above.

Strawberries - not strawberries at all

In fact, the plant that everyone is accustomed to calling strawberries is not really it. In Russia, they called green strawberries that sprouted in the wild.

After the emergence of a new species - Strawberry nutmeg, which began to grow in the gardens, the name of the strawberry for the round shape of the fruit passed to her. Today, this is the name of pineapple strawberry, which is grown on personal plots.

Many ancestors

Many scientists call pineapple strawberries "a citizen of the world", as in many countries it has ancestors. One of the ancestors (wild strawberry virgin) was brought to France in the 17th century from North America.

In the 19th century, English breeders began work on improving the cultivated species. But only after crossing with Chilean strawberries (it appeared in France in the 18th century), we managed to get the berry in the form in which we used to see it.

Many genes

It is surprising that strawberries have a huge number of genes (35 thousand), and a person has only 25 thousand. Scientists in 2010 managed to completely unravel the genetic code of this plant.

On a note!
But the number of genes in pineapple strawberries is not a record, for example, in rice there are more than 57 thousand of them.

When compared with other fruits and vegetables, the genetic code is only half the same.

Vitamin C More Than An Orange

A very unexpected fact that confirms the usefulness of the fruits of this plant. 100 g of strawberries contain about 59 mg of vitamin C, while freezing, about 41.2 mg are stored.

To get the daily norm of this vitamin, a child just needs to eat 5-6 medium-sized berries, and an adult - just over 100 g.

Also, strawberries contain a lot of folic acid, which is most useful for pregnant women. Useful for humans anthocyanins present in the composition. They eliminate the harmful effects of sugar intake in large quantities. You can safely eat strawberries with sugar and not worry about it.

Strawberries are a healthy crop that has long been grown in beds, but few people know about the history of this crop and the incredible facts that explain many of the facts and characteristics of the plant. They should be considered when growing.
