Features and technology of growing potatoes in bags

30.06.2019 Potatoes

Potatoes are grown everywhere, but there are land plots on which it is very difficult to get at least some kind of crop of this vegetable. In such cases, an unusual way will come to the rescue - you can grow potatoes in bags. A similar technique for accelerated harvesting in any zone of Russia. This will take much less time than to turn infertile soil into a plot that is more or less suitable for planting. It often happens that soil transformation is completely impossible.

Description of growing technology

To grow a good potato crop, you need to invest a lot of time and energy into this business. Vegetable needs:

  • weeding;
  • watering;
  • hilling;
  • fertilizer and insect protection.

It is simply impossible for elderly gardeners to care for their favorite vegetable, and you have to refuse to plant it. But there is a solution - grow potatoes vertically. This solution to the problem has many positive aspects. They will not take up much space and you can take care of them without bending your back. An additional bonus of this landing method is the decor. In the time of Peter, even ball gowns decorated flowers with potatoes.

Note!
Planting technology provides for the production of root crops even in the absence of free land.

Growing potatoes in bags is very simple, but you must follow the rules:

  1. Prepare containers for landing. In the work, you can take traditional bags that sell flour. It is necessary to make holes in them (bottom) for draining the liquid and around the perimeter for gas exchange.
  2. You need to purchase or prepare your own well-fertilized soil. It should be loose and fertile. If you prepare the soil with your own hands, it must be treated with a potassium permanganate solution.
  3. Pour the prepared soil into a bag, put whole or cut tubers into it, and cover it with soil and straw at the top.
  4. Bags with planted tubers must be exposed in the sun.

In stores you can find special bags for planting potatoes. They have all the necessary openings, including a valve for harvesting. They serve for several years. Some gardeners for this purpose use inserted garbage bags. The decision is ecologically wrong: the material emits harmful toxins.

Particular attention must be paid to hydration. If there is insufficient moisture, then tubers will not form. To accurately determine if there is enough moisture, it is recommended to purchase a special measuring device. Since potatoes grow in a confined space, fertilizers must be applied on time, the soil is quickly depleted.

Put bags of potatoes away from tomatoes and eggplant. Beans and marigolds can be planted nearby. The latter scare away the Colorado potato beetle. Potatoes in bags can be grown in any climate zone.

Pros and cons of the method

There are certain advantages to growing potatoes in bags. Everyone who at least once tried planting potatoes in bags note that this is a very good way:

  1. Seedlings are not afraid of pests living in the soil.
  2. Gardeners noted that the crop is much more abundant and larger than with a traditional planting.
  3. Such a landing saves time and effort significantly, since it does not require weeding of hilling and digging.
  4. If you provide a good flow of water, then the potato tubers will not rot.

The soil after such use can be sprinkled as fertilizer for flower beds and crops that do not have diseases common with potatoes.

With any method of growing vegetables, there are disadvantages and this method is no exception. One of the disadvantages of such a landing is the rather laborious process of soil preparation.

Note!
Bags need to be stable. Such potatoes need constant hydration.

Variety selection and step-by-step instructions

The most suitable varieties for this method of planting are early and mid-early, having good immunity to various diseases. Early varieties ripen very quickly and thereby reduce the time for caring for them. The most popular of them:

  1. Sante is a Dutch potato variety with a medium maturity. The tubers are yellow.
  2. Bellarosa is a very early variety of German selection, the fruits are smooth and large pink.
  3. Svitanok Kiev - medium early variety, higher than average productivity in any climatic zone.
  4. Povin is an early ripening variety, the fruits are ready for harvest in mid-June - early August, the mass of tubers is up to 200

In our country, planting potatoes in this way is better in mid-May, after the onset of constant heat.

When landing, it is advisable to use the following instructions:

  1. First, fill the ground with humus (10-30 centimeters) into the container.
  2. Put tubers whole or cut onto the soil.
  3. All this is covered with earth at 15 centimeters.
  4. After 7-15 days, when the sprouts appear and become 10-15 cm high, their leaves must be covered with a nutritious soil mixture.
  5. Point 4 must be repeated until the earth reaches from the top of a third of the height of the bag.
Attention!
Bags need to choose a shallow depth so that the potatoes have enough moisture and strength for development.

How to care

So that the work does not go in vain, and to get a good and quick harvest, you should properly care for such potatoes. To do this, pay attention to such points:

  1. The location of the bags. Containers with planted potatoes should be placed in a well-lit place. Provide good warming for faster seedlings. One option is that they can be placed along paths or in flower beds.
  2. It is important not to forget about ensuring sustainability (they can fail). To do this, you can lightly scoop the bags.
  3. Watering. Moisture from the bags will quickly evaporate, and it is very necessary for the formation of tubers, it is important to water the plant on time. Under the bag there should be a coating that will well absorb excess moisture, which will come out of a special hole. So you can prevent rotting when excess moisture. Before the first sprouts appeared, you should not water the plant. A day should be moistened with 3 liters of water, provided that the weather is dry.
  4. Top dressing. The soil is rapidly depleted, so fertilizers must be applied at least once a season. Prepare the preparations according to the instructions and use at the rate of 1 liter per 1 potato bush.

You can start harvesting in mid-August. There are two ways:

  1. Turn over and pour out the contents (so the bag remains intact and can be used next year), if further use of the container is not planned, then it can be cut.
  2. If the bag is equipped with special valves, it is easy to get the ripened tubers through these holes.
Note!
Usually, up to 5 kilograms of large potatoes are collected from one bag.

The most basic recommendation is not to forget about watering. He needs potatoes in bags regularly. It is necessary to ensure that the plant is sprinkled with earth on the very leaves.Do not forget about the time of fertilizer and ventilation.
