Terms and conditions of storage of beans for the winter

13.04.2019 Beans

To bean can be stored as long as possible, it is necessary to organize its proper storage. The product may have bugs and other pests; it may be affected by mold and infections. Therefore, it is important to create optimal conditions, not only for dry beans, but also for frozen and canned ones. The very first condition to keep the beans for the winter is dryness. High humidity is a favorable environment for harmful microorganisms.

How to protect beans from bugs

To make the grown product useful throughout the winter, it is stored at home. But it’s not always possible to do it right. If pests are planted in beans, they must be thrown away with the rest of the cereals. Even if the storage was in a sealed container - bean kernels can still eat seeds.

It is not difficult to save beans so that bugs are not wound. So, processing from pesticides at the stage of growth of leguminous plants will save from the grain. Crops need to be cultivated only from smooth, clean, whole seeds. Larvae can be inside the bean, under a thin top film. If such a seed is in the garden, the entire crop may be affected.

Fact.
Bean kernel - this insect lives on beds. When harvesting, along with the pods it gets to the warehouses.

At high humidity, in warm weather and with nutrition in the form of seeds, pests multiply. Larvae appear inside the pod. In a few weeks, 30-50 new individuals grow. It is possible to lay inside the beans. Therefore, even in sealed packaging, they appear from the inside. It is better to store beans for the winter after pre-processing it from pests.

Grains need to be placed in a small fabric bag. Place garlic or several branches of dill inside. They secrete substances that can repel pests. Store bags on the balcony or in the pantry. It is not necessary to freeze pests. They are afraid of cold temperatures below 7ºС. Therefore, you can simply store the fruits in a cold place.

For room temperatures, storage in glass with ash can be used. Ink does not like ink. The box can be covered with newspapers and stored there. But this method is not the most effective.

To prepare the beans for storage, you need to select containers and premises, create optimal conditions. For procurement, several packaging options can be selected. For cans, the main requirement is the possible creation of tightness. The material can be any:

  • glass;
  • plastic;
  • ceramics;
  • metal.

The lid should fit snugly against the edges. Close contact can be made through additional seals.

The bag, small in size, should be sewn from natural fabrics, lightweight, ventilated. It can be stored both in cold rooms and in a room. If it is a cardboard box, then the humidity must be in the room. The container should be ventilated or even poured into another.

Other methods must be used to store green beans.Freezing beans in a plastic bag is the best option. If placed in the refrigerator, the shelf life of the beans is no more than six months. Some housewives prefer to pre-boil, and then freeze green beans for the winter.

Another way is conservation. For different recipes, it can be just in the marinade, or together with other vegetables as a dressing.

How to dry and freeze beans

The product can be dried or frozen. For this, there are certain rules of GOST. A properly performed bean preparation operation will help to maintain the crop. How to dry beans at home:

  1. In the garden to pick pods.
  2. In this form, they are laid out in a sunny, ventilated place on the street. This can be done in the country house, or on the balcony.
  3. Drying lasts 10-15 days. Outwardly, it appears as a yellow, shriveled, slightly ajar pod. Inside, the grains remain solid.
  4. Next, carry out the processing in the oven. Expand the crop on a baking sheet and warm to 60 ° C. Processing time at least 30 minutes. In such conditions, the larvae die, and the beans are stored longer.

Now the dried product is ready for use, but you cannot leave such seeds for planting. The expiration date of dry beans is up to 2 years. It is quite possible to store beans so that bugs do not start at home, the main thing is to protect it from larvae.

For further planting, another processing method is used - freezing. A bag of seeds is placed in the freezer. At low temperatures, the larvae die, but the seed remains “alive”.

Harvesting asparagus food string beans for the winter can be done by freezing.

Storage at room temperature and in glass jars

Grains can be stored at room temperature. Processing for this is more thorough and requires more time. Freeze the culture bag in the refrigerator for three hours. Next, remove the product from it and dry.

You can warm in the oven to 70ºС. Then pack in bags or suitable containers. The lid must seal the container tightly. A dark, dry place is chosen for storage.

In order to properly store beans in glass jars, it is important to prevent pests from outside, which during the winter period will be able to get to the crop. If drying is not done enough, pests can go to all seeds. Therefore, storage takes place in sealed packaging. Any plastic container or plastic bag will cope with this task. After drying, prepared seeds should be poured into a sealed package. A glass jar with a lid is the most suitable option. Not a single pest can get inside.

Tip.
For better shelf life, it is preferable to use cans with a vacuum pump. After filling the container with beans, you can create a vacuum. This prevents the formation of bugs and fungus. The disadvantage of this operation is the inability to use seeds for planting.

Canning

Preservation can be carried out similarly to other blanks:

  1. Initially prepare by sterilizing jars.
  2. Next, warm the beans on a baking sheet or in a frying pan under the lid. Warming up should continue before grains begin to burst.
  3. In hot form, quickly pour the product into cans and close.
  4. This method will save the beans for many months.

Storage depends on the processing method and environmental conditions. Suitable places for long-term storage:

  • cellar;
  • barn;
  • cold warehouse.

The temperature in such places should not be higher than + 5ºС. You can store in the basement and on the loggia, but in shorter intervals.Temperature and humidity can vary, therefore, the grains must be packed in airtight containers. For storage during the winter period, pour in paper or rag bags. If you organize storage in boxes, it is necessary to make ventilation holes in them. This option is dangerous because of the possibility of mold formation due to high humidity. Be sure to ventilate such places.

bean shelf life

There is another point - how many beans are stored. The time depends on the method. Some seeds can last for several years. Such a long period is possible when placed in glass jars or during conservation. If you properly process the grains, then they will lie for 3 to 5 years, while maintaining their useful properties.

Legumes are very useful for the human body. With any method of processing there is a loss of useful qualities. Repeated freezing, warming destructively affect the properties. With optimal conditions and the right approach to business, beans can please their taste for from 6 months to several years. The main thing is to properly store the beans after the harvest.
