fighting aphids

One of the main enemies of cabbage is considered aphids. Small insects literally attack vegetables and spoil them, interfering with the normal development of the culture. As a result, the crop may be damaged or even destroyed without the possibility of restoration.

You can get rid of aphids on cabbage by folk remedies, they act quickly and are completely harmless to the vegetable itself.

Description of aphids and harm

Cabbage aphid is an insect with translucent wings and a long proboscis of a small size (body length is only 6-7 millimeters). Its body is painted in yellow-green color, it merges with cabbage leaves, so it is so easy to notice aphids. The insect eats juice - through a proboscis it pierces the leaf and sucks the juice out of it.

During the period of activity (spring and early summer), the female lays eggs on cabbage leaves. The eggs tolerate the cold well and calmly winter, in the spring, the infection of vegetables begins.

On a note!

Each female is capable of laying 40 eggs.

The harm from aphids can be colossal. First of all, this is a decrease in the quality of the crop - cabbage begins to wither and withers. In addition, aphids are considered a carrier of many diseases: late blight, powdery mildew and others. Together with aphids, ants often come to the garden (they are attracted to the sweet smell of insects), which complicates the treatment at times.

Causes of aphids on cabbage

The causes of the pest are:

  • contaminated soil;
  • diseased plants grown nearby;
  • strong frequent planting of plants on the site;
  • high soil moisture;
  • poor soil porosity.

The whole set of prerequisites can also be found, then the aphid breeds on a larger scale, and it becomes more difficult to destroy it every day. As soon as pests have been noticed in the garden, they immediately begin to treat cabbage.

Methods of struggle with folk remedies

Unlike chemicals that have a toxic effect not only on insects, but also on the crop as a whole, folk methods are safe: you can safely eat cabbage after processing. Most folk methods are based on the use of a pungent odor that insects are afraid of. From the second or third treatment, the pests already go away completely and no longer return.

Tobacco Blend

If tobacco leaves grow in the garden, they are torn off and dried. Then bred:

  • tbsp dry leaves;
  • 5 liters of water.

The mixture is left to infuse for a day, filter the infusion through cheesecloth and pour into a spray bottle. They process cabbage heads and the earth with a solution. Reprocessing is performed 3-4 days after the first time.

Vinegar

Vinegar is in every home, so using this method is easier than ever. It is enough to dilute 100 ml of table vinegar with a concentration of 6-9% in a bucket of water and irrigate vegetables and soil with a solution. Particular attention is paid to the lower part of the leaves, since the larvae and the pests themselves are most often located there. Vinegar treatment is carried out once a week for 3 weeks.

In order to keep the mixture longer on the leaves, 100 g of laundry soap crushed on a grater are previously dissolved in a bucket of water.

Ammonia

Another substance that gives off a specific smell is ammonia. It is sold in business departments and is inexpensive, but it works quickly.Dilute 50 ml of ammonia in 10 liters of water and water the cabbage and soil from a watering can.

It can be treated with ammonia no more than 1 time in 10 days due to the high nitrogen content in the preparation. Excess nitrogen leads to leaf deformation and impaired development of the vegetable.

Ash and pepper

Ash is the cure for most diseases and pests and helps, including aphids. Red pepper enhances the effect of ash, it causes the death of insects and prevents further infection of plants. Prepare a tool:

  • a glass of wood ash;
  • 3 tbsp chopped laundry soap;
  • 1 tbsp red pepper;
  • 10 liters of water.

All ingredients are dissolved in water and insisted day. Then the resulting mixture is treated with vegetables and land 1 time in 3-4 days. The process is done 2 more times to consolidate the effect.

Important!

Pepper can be replaced with ground cinnamon.

Herbal decoction

If you take grass with a pungent smell (wormwood, dandelions, tops), it will also help to cope with insects on the site. It takes ¼ buckets of freshly cut grass. Pour it in a bucket of water to the very top and insist 3-4 days. The resulting concentrate is diluted 5 times with water and irrigated vegetables and land. The procedure is repeated after 5-6 days. The total number of treatments should not be less than 2-3 times.

Prevention

The appearance of aphids on cabbage can be successfully avoided if preventive measures are taken. They are as follows:

  • pretreatment of land before planting:
  • treatment of cabbage seeds;
  • processing of grown plants.

These stages will prevent the appearance of aphids and other insects. The earth is most often treated with copper sulfate (2% solution) or a weak solution of potassium permanganate (pink color). Seeds before planting also need to be soaked in potassium permanganate or a solution of hydrogen peroxide (2-4%).

When the cabbage has grown, it is watered with an onion broth prepared in the following way:

  • husk from 3-4 bulbs;
  • 5 liters of water.

The husk is steamed in hot water and kept for at least 3 days. Filter the broth through cheesecloth and sprinkle vegetables and earth. A pair of such treatments with a time interval of 1 time in 10 days will protect the future crop.

Next to cabbage, you can plant a bed with onions or garlic, sometimes they also grow lemon balm, mint. Pungent odors from plants will make cabbage unattractive for aphids, and it will not attack it.

It is better to take care of the preservation of the crop in advance than to hastily deal with the pest later. Untimely adoption of measures to combat insects or complete inaction often lead to a sad outcome - the gardener is simply without cabbage. Aphids can be bred, and this is not so difficult, especially if it appeared not so long ago. It is worth paying attention to vegetables more often in order to be able to stop pests in time, before they cause much harm.
