What is the reason why cabbage seedlings wither and die, what to do

seedlings fade

The crop depends on the health of the seedlings. A common problem that occurs when growing seedlings of cabbage is wilting seedlings. If the cabbage falls, you need to find out the cause, and then take action quickly.

Causes

Cabbage is a cold-resistant plant. Ideal conditions for development - a temperature of 16 to 20 degrees. If there is dry and warm air around the seedlings (temperature above 25 degrees), it feels bad and practically does not develop. Cabbage is also important lighting. With a lack of light, seedling growth slows down and the crop, in the end, cannot be harvested.

Adverse growing conditions adversely affect seedlings. Reasons why plants wilt:

  • too warm, dry air (therefore, it is practically impossible to grow strong plants in an apartment with central heating);
  • improper soil composition, excess nutrients;
  • lack of minerals;
  • excess moisture;
  • acid soil;
  • the earth after irrigation is not loosened;
  • direct sunlight;
  • damage to the root system;
  • disease.
Advice!

As soon as the seedlings appear in the pots, they need to be placed for several days in a cool room.

Signs

Recognizing that cabbage seedlings are uncomfortable is very simple. Growth sharply slows down, and the leaves become sluggish. The whole plant slopes down, and may fall to the ground. If you find the very first sign, you must immediately take measures to rehabilitate the plant.

Treatment

Having identified the cause of the wilting of cabbage, you need to start treatment. Gardeners use different methods of "resuscitation" seedlings, depending on the situation:

  1. Excess fertilizer can be removed by abundantly watering the planting. It is important to allow water to flow freely through the drainage holes.
  2. If the appearance indicates a lack of some trace element, it must be introduced into the soil as soon as possible or foliar treatment should be carried out.
  3. With excess moisture, you need to reduce the frequency of watering.
  4. If the seedlings are suffering from direct sunlight, the window should be shaded or planted deep into the room.
  5. If the cabbage is sick, it is the disease that must be treated (the keel, the black leg and other fungal diseases lead to wilting).

Resistant varieties

A variety of cabbage is selected depending on their needs and climatic conditions of the region. Sustainable early grades:

  • Cossack;
  • Rinda;
  • June;
  • Tobia.

They need to be sown early, and can be eaten in the summer. And later varieties can be planted later, they ripen in the fall, and are also well stored in the winter. Resistant late grades:

  • Aggressor;
  • Amager;
  • Valentine
  • Gingerbread man;
  • Mara.

Prevention

.

To avoid the "fall" of seedlings, you should competently take care of cabbage and carry out preventive measures:

  1. Choose good seeds with an actual shelf life, and the package should be closed. Open packaging with cabbage seeds - it is better not to store.
  2. Make up the soil yourself. It is necessary to mix equal parts of peat and humus. To this mixture add 10 tablespoons of ash per 10 kg of earth. You can’t take garden soil from a bed on which cabbage has already grown - pathogenic bacteria can persist in the ground, infecting young seedlings.
  3. Sow the seeds 2 months before the intended transplant to the garden.
  4. Seed material must first be disinfected and soaked.
  5. Before sowing, water the soil abundantly, and carry out the next watering only after the emergence of sprouts.
  6. Keep the distance between seedlings at least 2-3 cm.
  7. Cabbage needs light, but not direct sunlight.
  8. After each watering, loosen the ground to provide ventilation for the roots.
  9. For the full development of cabbage seedlings, it is necessary to maintain a low temperature in the room.
  10. Before transplanting into the garden, harden seedlings on the balcony or near an open window.
  11. Fertilize twice during the development of seedlings.
  12. When 4 leaves have grown, transplant seedlings to a permanent place.
Advice!

Throughout the growing period of seedlings, it is very important to avoid drafts.

Svetlana S.

Last year, I planted cabbage in the purchased soil, a couple of weeks after emergence - it all lay down and began to dry. It was not possible to save, it was necessary to plant again, but a different grade. Used for re-planting land from the garden, but added ash and some peat. Watering moderately, shaded from the direct sun (I have southern window sills), as a result, everything with seedlings was good. The harvest was normal, albeit a little later than planned. Therefore, it seems to me more depends on the variety and composition of the soil. And the sprouted seedlings - not to save, is useless.

Olga Nikolaevna

While I lived in an apartment, I did not manage to grow seedlings of cabbage (I had to buy on the market). But, as soon as they moved to their home, the seedlings grow normally, do not dry and do not fade. Apparently, the whole thing is in a very dry, warm air.

Conclusion

Seedlings of cabbage are moody and require special care. Observing the basic rules of cultivation, it will be possible to avoid wilting plants and, in the end, get a plentiful harvest from your own garden.
