Tips from Chainsaw Professionals

Chainsaw is a professional tool for sawing wood. The use of sharp cutting elements in it, as well as a liquid fuel engine, can lead to serious injuries and consequences. Errors when using the saw are mainly made by beginners. Proper use of the tool is the key to safe work and maintaining the health of the worker, as well as those around him.

Preparation for work

A chainsaw is a familiar and familiar tool for everyone whose working body is a closed chain. The latter is driven by a two-stroke internal combustion engine. A feature of such a motor is the work on a mixture of gasoline with oil. Fuel is prepared in advance for refueling the saw. As components, take gasoline not lower than A92 (for imported engines, preferably not lower than A95), as well as special oil for chainsaws. Dilute in a proportion of 1:50. Thoroughly mixing the mixture in any clean container, pour fuel into the tank.

Chainsaw TipsBeginners should carefully study the marking on the filler neck. There are two of them on the chainsaw: one for refueling the mixture, and the second for filling with oil, which lubricates the chain during operation. On some models they are next to each other, they can be distinguished by the characteristic symbols printed next to the hole. A gas station icon is shown for refueling, and a drop-shaped drawing is located next to the oil filler neck. Filling with fuel should only be done on a horizontal hard surface.

Lubrication of the chain web and tires is a prerequisite for high-quality cutting and long-term operation of the tool. Manufacturers offer to use only original oils of their own production. However, you can fill in the usual one, which is suitable for the motor of a car with a viscosity of W30-W40. A lubricant level mark is located next to the filler neck. During operation, it is necessary to periodically monitor the amount of oil in order to have time to top it up.

Note!
It is not permissible to use run-off or other petroleum products for chain lubrication. This may cause damage to the web or tire.

Before first use and subsequent (approximately once a month), the bypass roller bearing must be lubricated. It is located at the end of the tire and serves as a support for the chain web. The latter has a special hole for lubrication, into which it is necessary to drip a few drops of oil. You can use an ordinary medical syringe. As the lubricant used the same oil as for the chain.

Saw launch

After adding fuel and oil to lubricate the chain, you can start the saw. It is advisable to read the operating instructions for the device before doing this. At the first start-up, as well as in the future, before starting up, it is necessary to check the chain tension. To do this, pull the middle links. They should move 5-7 mm from the tire. If this value is greater, the chain is pulled by the tension mechanism, less - on the contrary, weaken. Pulling the cutting blade along the tire, check the ride and the absence of jamming. Inspect the position of the chain brake. It has the appearance of a plastic panel next to the front handle, which hold the saw (it is necessary to fix the chain when starting or warming up the engine). The brake should be on - pressed forward.

When starting, the saw is placed on a flat surface. The front handle is held with the left hand. The right leg is placed on the rear handle, the ignition is turned on. The throttle is moved to the closed position, several times sharply pulled by the handle of the starter. After the first “flash”, the throttle valve is opened and the trigger handle is pulled again until the engine starts.

Now you can turn off the chain brake, making sure that under the cutting blade there are no foreign objects that it can pull along. Press the gas several times to warm the engine. Check the lubricant supply to the chain.

To do this, bring the tool to a light surface (paper, board). Oil traces should appear on it, which indicates a sufficient supply of lubricant. With the throttle closed, only a cold motor is started. A warm engine does not need such a procedure.

Beginner Mistakes

A chainsaw is a tool of increased danger. The slightest inaccuracy can lead to serious injury or even death. Common errors include:

  1. Running saws on weight. In order to start the engine in this position, at least experience and strength are needed. This is very traumatic: a cold motor may not “grab” the first time, but may jam the starter.
  2. Washed down by the end face of the tire. In this position, the slightest twitching leads to a jump off of the saw. This way of working should be avoided.
  3. Movement with a working saw. If you need to take a few steps to the side, stopping the saw, and then starting it over with a new one makes no sense. But when you need to walk a few tens of meters, it is better to mute the device.
  4. Sawing timber with nails. When working with old logs and boards, you may not notice fasteners that can cause the cutting blade to break.
  5. Tensioning the chain without following the manufacturer's recommendations. Excessively stretched web increases the load on the engine and tire. A loose chain can fly off. To check the tension, pull the web along the tire. The chain should move freely along the tire, but not dangle.
Note!
If there are pauses in work, but the saw is not jammed. The chainsaw should be locked and braked.

It is important to understand that not only beginners make mistakes, but also experienced builders. Novice saw users make a mistake due to ignorance or lack of practice. Experienced workers make the same mistakes because they consider themselves to be professionals, but sometimes this is a deceiving fallacy. For safe operation, the safety precautions and recommendations of the manufacturer must be observed.

Safety Rules and Recommendations

The cutting edges of the saw blade can cause irreparable damage to human health. A few simple tips will help you work safely:

  • study the manufacturer's instructions before use;
  • use safety shoes, clothing, and goggles;
  • hold the chainsaw with both hands;
  • standing saw, slightly away from the cut;
  • always transport the chainsaw in the appropriate sheath;
  • Do not cut on outstretched arms and above shoulder height;
  • Do not use a chainsaw on a tree or on stairs;
  • Do not allow the saw chain to come into contact with the remnants of nails, wire or concrete.

Maintenance and repair of the chainsaw should be carried out by specialists. Incorrectly performed maintenance can result in damage to the saw and will be dangerous for the user. To extend the life of the tire and chain, maintain proper tension on the web and use good quality grease. Refuel the saw before starting the engine.

It’s easy to operate the chainsaw without injuries. Following the recommendations of the manufacturer, as well as the advice of professionals, you can protect yourself and others.

    It is very useful to have one or two spare sharpened chains and a sharpening machine. In Smolensk they make good and not expensive.
